Ok, I'm new around here, and to game design in general. I have the O.H.R.R.P.G. design system (duh) and have an awesome idea for a game. I think. So, I'm going to make it, and if people hate it, ah well, it's a learning experience (a couple thosand points worth, I imagine <ba-dum pish>). So, really, I just want to know if anyone out there has advice for a newbie designer whose idea may or may not be any good. Once I get some actual content put together, I will post it, but for now, I would really like advice. Please?

First play some of the games on the gamelist, to get a general idea of what the OHR is capable of, and also to see your competition. Before any of that, play Arfenhouse, whose purpose is more or less making fun of what NOT to do in 99% of OHR games. If you've got more time on your hands, play one of the longer games like Walthros or FFH, though both are considered incredibly lengthy. In general, look around for some RPGs and study how they're made, the way maptiles fit together, etc., so that when you do start on your game, you've got a general idea of what works, and what doesn't.

Coincidentally, there's a Halloween contest going on, which should conclude in two weeks. A lot of good games are made during contests, so you might want to go ahead and check those out once they're released.

Wow! A new game designer, and not a single spelling or grammatical error in your whole announcement post!

As for my advice, NOONES FIRST GAME IS EVER ANY GOOD. Make a small practice game first to get the hang of the OHR. Don't throw your game idea away with your first game, 'cause its probably not going to be very good. Unless you remake it later. Raspberry!

yeah, the experience is invaluable for knowing the competition and how things work.

in general though, it's impossible to get what everyone wants, sometimes it's a "do what i can and learn from it" kind of thing where you wing it and improve from people's critism and pointers/advices. of course not all should be taken into account, it helps a lot.

true to that, i was pretty surprised myself. how long have you found the OHR system?

Walthros, however, was not your first game - it was your first released game.

Anyway, Lost Wanderer, welcome to the boards! As for advice in the realm of game design, it's generally a good idea to keep a notebook with you that you can jot down ideas into. It doesn't have to be organized in any special way unless you want it to be neat or something. You should always always always plan out a game before you even create the .rpg file (at least some general aspects - your design document does not have to be 100% full before creating the .rpg file, but at least have something to go by in there). You don't have to plan every single aspect of the game right then and there, especially considering you're bound to come up with ideas as you go along. This design document will help you GREATLY, as you won't be going along just randomly adding stuff - the ingredients are already laid out for you by having this design document. Most of all, have fun, and I hope to see some good work from you.

A'right, I'll leave it at that then, since I don't want you to be put off by my excessive stupidity....stupidness....both. Ha ha ha! ....ah..... Oookay...

guess who the producers for those were...

Reasonably Septaweekly is/was produced by rinku
OHR Monthly is/was produced by Moogle1

rinku has started to reappear on IRC, but shows no sign of wanting to commit the amount of time he did before then.
Rinku was a person some people admired and looked up to for inspiration, but others would dislike him completely. (don't flame me, i'm stating facts! oh wait, there hasn't been a flame war here yet... i think.)
Moogle1 the plotscripting guru, is in brazil on a missionary or something. and may come back after the missionary, which is in a year or two.
Moogle1 knew how to plotscript strategy games at the time of when people thought making a small movie was a big deal. (getting there, slowly... only up to polishing off custom menus)

Fear me, and my astounding intellect, as I have many important things to say. Don't mind my spelling errors in ANY of my posts, and we'll get along fine. For, you see... I am not really that bad... I just like to think I am...
I never made fun of anyone but Minnek. MUAHAHAHA!!! Listen up to what I have to say... I'll try to keep it short and sweet. That is mah advice... Big grin

Lost Wanderer- Glad to see you in CP. Have a fun time!! If I were you, I'd take Fenrir's advice and play some games already made so you get a gist of what you can do with the OHR. I look forward to seeing what you do.

And definitely, take the process slowly, especially if you're new to game design. It can get discouraging if you think you can make the masterpiece project the first few times. It's definitely a learning process.

But anyways, have fun!

Nice ta meet you. It's good to see a newcomer without spelling or grammar errors or emoticon spam in their post.

Also, if you're looking to make good graphics, take a look at Fenrir's games and some of the better known SNES ones. http://pixeltutorial.cjb.net/ is a good tutorial on general pixel art.

Bah. I never saw anything good come out of Tsugumo's tutorial. It was either him repeating stuff I already knew, or repeating and explaining the same point over and over and over.
