I problem I see here is that 'plotscripting' isn't being taken as adding features to a game. When you plotscript something, you add features to a game, presumable to improve it in some way, not to add to the 'scripting expertise' of the game.

Adds Eggie to the "List"

Eggie...Eggie...Eggie...no one is forgetting the core of the engine. Everytime they go into it it screams "RPG!" The reason people make original games is to show their creativity. No one has forgotten the "core" of the engine. I mean, look, we a have at least 100 crappy RPGs up on the gamelist. Horray for them, and sticking with what James Paige "wants." I guess all those "F" and "D-" reviews really show that they know what they are doing.

Add me to the list then, doesn't make me an enemy. But if you wanna call me an idiot, I don't care. It's just that I have my say, and since we do make plotscript super-games, the only really good regular RPG that has been made recently is TSSE.

And a good reason while there is a number of new simulation games is the recent contest.

And if nobody made super-non-RPG games, then regular RPGs on the gamelist would be getting higher ratings. The super-plotscript games get higher ratings because they're different, and usually well done for being in contests.

I agree with Longetech partly. The OHRRPGCE is primarily a RPG engine and trying to make another engine on it is effectively inferior to a different approach. However, the OHRRPGCE’s strong point is not its battle system- it is its ease of use. Hamsterspeak is an unbelievably simple language to learn, and it, despite what people seem to believe, is fairly powerful. I won’t argue that it is inferior to C, Basic, etc. I do think that most “plotscripting games” are just novelty, but if a feature can be implemented with the OHRRPGCE and it runs well, it should be done with the OHRRPGCE for simplicity’s sake. To whoever praised Game Maker: you are an idiot. That engine is nightmarishly slow and almost impossible to use! I highly doubt that you’ve ever tried to make a decent game with Game Maker.

I'm flattered. Though even it's not A+ or even A material yet. I agree that the OHR is best suited to make RPGs, though at this point I believe we've seen most of the best games it'll ever make. All that's left is for upcoming games to have progressively better graphics and plotscripting. I could be wrong though, and we'll have to wait a few more years to see.

Someone obviously hasn't played Crescent Dreams yet *cough*

After re-reading, I am inclined to agree with the basics of Longebane's out-look (more RPGs, less sidescrollers), however, the way the point is presented is what I didn't like. It seemed to be an attack on non-RPGs, rather than a plea for the community to spend more time on actual RPGs.

As for Fenrir's comments...I agree in some points. True that the majority of game designers now-a-days would rather go for plotscripting feats and bootifulu graphics rather then an interesting story or good music. After playing EOTE and EOTE2 again, I'll admit I am missing the "glory" days when all you could compare too was commercial games, and thus you really wanted to make your games higher quality.

Now, with all the OHR games out, the main goal seems to "beat" the other released games, which usually means beautiful graphics or something unique rather then a touching story. Which is quite sad, actually, because I'd rather play an OHR-RPG with a neat story then beautiful graphics.

At least gameplay seems to be improving generally overall. Thought I dare say it will take a wonder to beat EOTE2. That game is the best balanced OHR game I have seen to date.

Urg, off topic.

I doubt you've ever tried to make a game with Game Maker.

Here:

This is Sword of Jade Windows, running at 1) a faster framerate than the OHR version (30fps, and that's only because I choose to have it do so.), 2) with scanline-effect, 3) with weather effects, and all of this was done in the span of a day.

I'd rather not turn this into a stupid engine-vs-engine discussion, but there you go.

Depends on your RAM, JSH. Game Maker is a pile of shit if your ram is low(probably from spyware, which I had problems of.).

Now the only problem I have is the load time takes years.

GM can make some decent stuff, but you have to be good to do anything. Example: Super Vampire Killer vs. Gradius clone.

Also, Game Maker can connect to the intarweb, whcih is sweet, but I'm pretty sure MMF can do that too(and better), so it kills it in that, too.

Hm, I seem to have a different problem with the article than everyone else.
What's wrong with light-hearted games? Just because it's not epic and deathly serious all the time doesn't mean it's an inferior game. Heck, some totally serious games get so lost in themselves they cease to be any fun, or get so lost in the expostion that the no longer seem to be a game at all, just a depressing movie (I mean this as a general statement on games in general. I haven't played enough OHR games to know how true it is here). And if there's one thing we all agree on, it's that the OHRRPGCE is for games, not movies, hence the "Game" in the name.
Oh, and I love your work Fenrir. Keep up the amazingly good job.

To be honest, I find myself taking the same position as Eggie on this issue. I would muh prefer to see RPGs coming out of the OHR than something like a sidescrolling game, because I like games mostly for their story than anything else(which is why I happen to find Xenosaga Episode One: Der Wille zur Macht a fantastic game). It's also what I'd enjoy making with the OHR more than anything, especially since its a way to bring to life a story that I write.

EDIT: I meant Eggie, not Eddie. Oookay...
