I was at school the other day and overheard these kids talking about Final Fantasy and it made me laugh. Not the subject, but what they said. One kid said to the other "Dude, Final Fantasy is only good because of the graphics, they rock!" The other ragged on the storyline. And it hit me, everyone has different opinions on what needs to be focused the strongest in a game. What do you think needs the most emphasis in a game?

None of those are important.

Presentation is the most important aspect of game design. (Presentation can mean introduction and growth through battle systems/enemy difficulty/whatever, in addition to aesthetic presentation) Bad audio/visuals presented in the correct manner can be purdier than improperly used ones; it all depends on the theme.

Gameplay is what makes a game actually a game. This makes it very important. And Gameplay includes battles.

Equally important is Presentation. This involves how everything fits together. Story, Gameplay, Graphics, Music, everything. If that's messed up, you failed.

'Course, as a writer, Story and Characterization have a soft spot in my heart, but they take a bow to the previously mentioned aspects.

Well, let's take a game that has been popular for years. One that is older than many of you and that people will continue to play when we're all dead.

Tetris.

The graphics generally suck, many versions have no music, but it does have gameplay. That's why it's been cloned, redone, etc. so much through the years. Heck, I've even considered making an OHR version.

(But I won't.)

I voted battle system cause in RPGs I think that's the most important aspect of gameplay. Sometimes people seem to think that battles are just like obstacles for you to get past so you can complete the story, but they should be enjoyable in some way. Otherwise by adding in battles you're just making your game less enjoyable. And who wants that?

Story is nice, but I think how interesting the dialogue is written is way more important than how good the story is. A good story is always good to have, of course, but if you're reading a good story with boring dialogue then you'll probably be bored by it.

Graphics are very important, despite what a lot of people will say. When you're playing a game with bad graphics you start out with a bias against the game. You will likely expect the game to be bad, and so the bad points of the game will be made more obvious to you. And in general, you'll probably enjoy a game more if what you're looking at looks cool (this is assuming the game is supposed to be taken seriously, not like Arfenhouse or Walthrus).

Well, that's why I consider Story and Characterization two separate aspects, and prefer the latter over the former. Storyline should only be a backdrop for Characterization, and Characterization is best expressed through Dialogue.

Battles are the least important, for me at least. For me it's a tie between story and gameplay, but Story got it in the end. I hate battles. I hate slogging thru them, yes slogging. RPG battles are lame.

It seems strange to me that someone who doesn't like RPG battles would ever want to play RPGs. I mean, you can get a story from a book or even a TV show without having to go through all the battles.

RPG stories are usually more in-depth than a movie.
more visual than a book
and more fun, because of the interactions.

battles would be least important if you play for the story in a RPG, and no... battles aren't everything in a RPG, I think it'll be tied into gameplay though.

That's what makes an RPG so fun to me, the story. I love it when the writer can begin to grab my interest and string me along feeding out a great story and tons of plot twists. As was said, everything is important, but I strongly believe that graphics could mean nothing as long as the story and characters keep you interested. It's like watching a TV show you really like. You enjoy seeing what happens to the characters in it. Gameplay comes second in my book because of the fact that I tend to get bored sometimes with just about anything, and they're more like tiny little breaks in between the story. Heh, that and minigames.

RMZ never specified what sort of game. It depends:

Game Type A: In general, a game is a game, and whether or not the game is fun is the most important point. Gameplay.

Game Type B: Personally, I play RPGs almost solely for the story, dialog, and presentation. See Flamer's and JSH's responses.

Game Type C: For games that aren't quite games, or concentrate on their atmosphere, the presentation is the most important. Eg. City of Dreams. Non-interactive games. Super Metroid, although that had excellent gameplay too.
