What in your opinion is the best minigame? Like, describe it in detail about what it is, and what happens.

Perfect minigame:

Adventure-style game where you chase after objects
with a sword. Certain objects give you certain
amounts of points. Running into them gives you
points and makes you lose health (it also destroys
the object, but I guess that goes without saying). When your health
reaches zero, you lose. After you beat a designated
amount of objects, you go on to the next level. The
game can have an unlimited amount of levels with things
that can have hellish amounts of speed at a certain level,
or a final boss (personally, I prefer number 1 since its
a MINI game).

Chocobo Chess. A fast-paced tactics minigame that I originally designed for FF7-2, but gave up on due to inability to script AI.
You and your opponent each have three CC pieces, and you must move all of your pieces to the other side of a 6x6 board before your opponent does to win. The gimmick was that there were different piece types that had different advantages; the thief could move two spaces in one turn; the knight could attack another unit to "disable" it on the next turn, etc. The only way to get some unit types is to defeat a special opponent, so in the end, this is very much like some of the card games that you see in the Final Fantasy series.

Chocobo Breeding would kick ass. But... I'm sure that's as complicated as it was to do in FF7. It was easy in FF9 when you just got more abilities with the chocobo. If anyone knows how to set up something for breeding chocobos, post it here. Someone would love to see it I am sure.

Sephyroth, if you still have the graphics and such for the chocobo chess, let me know; I would like to take a wack at it. I have an idea for how to script the AI.

Thanks,

The best mini game isn't defined by it content, but where in the game it's placed. Although no one wants to play a boring mini game, ask yourself what the point of a mini game is. Generally, (this is especially the case with RPGs) the player will get bored after going from dungeon to dungeon, level building, getting new weapons/armor etc. Some players can't take playing the same game for a long time, so the designers give them the opportunity to play a different game, but while still playing the same game.

A good example is FFVII. I hate playing RPGs, and was considering quitting after the Shinra tower, but then there was that motorcycle game at just the right spot. I thouroughly enjoyed that, even though the game wasn't perfect, it managed to break up the monotony for me, so it achieved it's objective. Also, I love the fact that you can go back to the Gold Saucer almost anytime you want and play more different games.

The above stuff is just for RPGs, though. I personally love games that are just connected minigames (that's why RMZ and Worthy's game got my #1 vote for the 48 hour contest, among other reasons) and in that case, it's important to continually top yourself. The first game should be one of the best, and then one a little worse, but still good, and keep getting better and better. Other than that, it doesn't matter about the specifics of each seperate game, other than they're fun.

But to talk more of the actual subject, a mini game I would really like to play is a game where you make mice dance.

Here's JSH's "OMFG WRONG!!11" two cents of the day:

Minigames are a waste of time. Unless the minigame is directly related to the game's theme (Like in Mario and Luigi), it should be left out since it's pointless. This is not to say that all minigames are bad, but they are as a whole worthless.

Now, in games like Zelda minigames makes sense, since the goal of the game is to solve puzzles -> collect items -> defeat ganon/whatever. Catch my drift? But in FF7, the goal is... chase Sephy. Chocobo Breeeding didn't fit the game at all, but it was a decent mingame.

If I had to pick one game with the best minigames ever, I'd say Super Mario RPG. I'll dwell no further than that.

I disagree. Chocobo breeding was fun, and that is the point of the game. The purpose of all games is to entertain the user. If the minigame is fun and is somewhat relevant to what's going on, it fits the game. Personally, I like sidequests, so breeding chocobo's and taking a break from finding sephy was kinda nice.

If you have to take a break from a game you're playing it must seriously suck.

Why not make the minigame separate, hm?

That isn't neccesarily true "Poodles". Minigames are meant for the player to sit back and take a small break. And I agree with Squall on the point that the placement of the game is critical to how much the player could enjoy it. Like, for instance, a surfing minigame would suck if you were in a forest. Placement is everything. Half the fun of an RPG is wandering the world map and solving puzzles to find secrets. So if you're saying minigames are unneccessary then you are saying the same about sidequests.

Um, who said sidequests are necessary?

You can have "wandering around and solving puzzles to find secrets" without having to include it as a sidequest or minigame. It's quite easy to integrate such a thing into the main game. I'm with JSH on this one, minigames are unnecessary as are sidequests with some exceptions. It's silly how one has to breed birds to get the best attack in the whole game.

as Aeth said, sidequests are unecessary. Hence the name 'sidequests.'

They're put in to addict stupid gamers for a longer period of time.

Of course minigames are unnecessary, but so is quality.

As Aeth said, what's good about breeding birds to get the best weapon for the main character? Well... Think about it. The best weapon, is not mandatory. Heck, if you want to think about it like that, extra weapons are uneccessary and don't contribute to the story. But then why do we buy them and use them? Easy, because we like power, and it's fun to buy new things to make the game easier. Some sidequests result in that same thing, along with minigames. Because some minigames give you items or money to get new things.
