I figured thanks to Fen, this will be the best place to ask this question:
What makes music sound 'viking'?
Whats modes are used?
What harmonies and progressions are used?
Thanks,
Jabbz. _________________ Moogle no longer owes prizes. |

Wellp, since I composed this music I guess I should answer.
Nothing, except perhaps its grandiose feel, is particularly viking about it. However, I did use the brasses a lot when I was going for the quest-y viking feel. Choir and drums too.
I did not pay attention to modes, nor progressions (for the most part). I simply went with my 'inner' ear.
The music was also intentionally very thematic. If you listen closely, you'll hear two recurring melodies, one for the 'bad side' and one for the good. The rest of the melodies were designed simply to give feeling to a given surroundings, while maintaining that grandiose quest feel.
There were also times when Fen referred me to pieces other people had done in unrelated sites, so my decision was in order to do what Fen invisioned, I needed to pursue a certain 'feel', instead of actually trying to recreate viking music. _________________ SACRE BLEU!

Here's a historic account:

Otherwise known as a hell of a lot of poetic license. Since we don't really know the type of music Vikings enjoyed, you're free to make up something that you think sounds like what the Vikings would have enjoyed. Just use similar instruments as to what they used while going with your inner intuition (I'm sure you wouldn't want to actually emulate ancient music by every detail. You'd alienate your audience.) and everything will be fine. _________________ Calehay |

I could've sworn I was to expect a link somewhere in that post. |
