Specifically, I can't run VDMS with Game. I just installed the newest version of VDMS and the command option for running a file with it doesn't appear on the right-click menu for Game.exe

I'm confused, because I've never encountered this problem before with previous versions, though the previous version of VDMS I had did stop working recently.

The OHR uses Windows (also Midi, Ogg, Mp3, Wav) now, so VDMS is unnecessary.

Then why isn't the game music working?

What version of the OHR are you using? I would assume the latest, Voxhumana, but you didn't actually say anything about updating your OHR version.

If you're not using Voxhumana, try that, and if that doesn't work, try this alternative sound backend: http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/nightly/ohrrpgce-wip-fb-native2.zip

Yes, I am using the latest version.

I tried the alternative sound backend and it's still not working.

I apologize if this sounds demeaning, but is the game that you're playing supposed to have sound?

Yes. I've tested it with at least five games that are supposed to have sound.

:( I've never before heard anyone complain that sound just doesn't work.

There's only one more thing I can suggest: (assuming windows) go into your sound mixer and check that nothing's muted. Otherwise, I don't think I can help.

Perhaps the games you're playing only have MIDI/BAM music, which is played back totally differently under both SDL_mixer and music_native2. Do MIDIs play normally on your computer?

You could also try other programs that use SDL_mixer and see if they play back sound. One such program is Open Leaping Lemmings (http://hamsterrepublic.com/dl/), though you could try anything that comes with a sdl_mixer.dll.

I've never been able to get MIDIs to successfully play on this computer.

The sound on Open Leaping Lemmings works though.

There's your problem. The OHR translates BAMs into MIDIs for playback (not ideal, consider that from MIDI to BAM is a big difference).

SDL_Mixer actually uses timidity under linux, which converts MIDI to waveform for playback, and the windows build of sdl_mixer can be compiled to use it too. I've compiled sdl_mixer before, but it was a lot of work and I've since lost that installation of msys in a harddisk crash. Maybe I can find you a win32 build using timidity somewhere online.

If you can, I would be very grateful.

Oh, I was wrong. Windows builds are built with timidity, you just have to install the GUS sound patches as directed at http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_mixer/. The GUS file is 15MB however. You can open tar.gz files, right? You can use winrar, 7-zip, winzip, or many other programs.

I just tried it, now MIDIs sound way better than with Windows' synthesiser :)
