Title has the basic question; sorry if I ramble.

I'm one of the many people who has ideas and would like to design games, but possesses few art skills. While I can probably put together decent-looking things given enough time, I'm not willing to spend that time (part of why I'm not an artist) on the many sprites and tilesets necessary for a game.

There's no way I'm going to subject anyone to large quantities of my art, as even if the story was a thousand times better than I like to believe, it would still make your eyes bleed. But if I have a base to build from, I wouldn't mind creating new sprites or tiles as necessary. So my question is essentially if there's any hope of this, or if I should step out as a slacker instead of making a futile effort.

From what I've read Vikings of Midgard is free for use. That's kind, given how well-made it is. But I'm sure no one wants to play "Midgard Vikings: The Rehashed Adventure." Nor are people going to just hand over all the work they've done. Is there anything else available for general use?

The OHR doesn't really have much public domain stuff available. The RPG Maker community is full of tilesets (chipsets, as they call them), though most of them are not truly public domain (rips from commercial games, generally.) There are a few well done original and public domain RPG Maker chipsets that you might ask the authors if you can work to convert them into the OHR, but that will take bit of skill and work.

If you ask me, I think you are better off being patient and learning how to do your own graphics.

4 years makes a difference.

I think there's a fairly old website that hosted some public domain art. However, if I remember right, most of it was pretty terrible. I don't have the link, but I'm sure someone does.

Like Calehay said, it doesn't hurt to just keep practicing.

I think this community is pretty lenient on graphics, except for maybe one graphics whore. It's more important to learn to not blind your player permanently, as well as put *some* effort into your graphics. If your grass looks like glowing nuclear waste that makes CRT radiation even more harmful than it is, for example, then you may need to tone it down.

This?

I forgot AdrianX also posted some resources, but I believe everything except Character Sets, Attack Sets, and enemies are ripped from commercial games.

This community is more active than it looks. Thanks for the responses.

A few people mentioned ripping from commercial games and I was vaguely curious about that as well. It would certainly be an easy route. Would using things from a game be heavily frowned upon here? Obviously I have no plan to sell the results and I wouldn't rip characters.

The problem is that I'm not lenient with myself (again, part of why I'm not an artist). If you asked me to draw you a picture of a house, 24 hours later I'd have a blank page and several thousand worn-down erasers.

Thanks to those of you who mentioned this, though I had already found this site. I did try to do basic searches before making a thread. My opinion here is similar to Surlaw's.

Yeah, I recognize most of those straight off the bat.

There's nothing bad about ripping graphics, it's just less desirable. Final Fantasy H is a more or less popular game with ripped graphics.

But it takes skill to do a good ripping job, especially considering the OHR's strange tile dimensions. I'd much rather play a game with some not-so-great original graphics than play a game with poorly ripped graphics.

You also have to consider that seeing graphics from somewhere else (or music, or spell names, etc.) is going to put someone in mind of that game, taking them out of your game's world for a moment, and that's never good.

What I don't suggest is ripping graphics and then claiming how great your graphics are, leading everyone to believe they aren't ripped. (Like a certain game with an A rating on the gamelist that I know... :-X ) That's just tacky.

Hello, MenosTorpe.
I like your optimistic attitude. You have to start somewhere, right?

On an off topic note, I didn't realize FFH's graphics were ripped. I thought Fenrir did those himself, because they looked much like the original graphics he did in his other popular games. Really confused
I remember he got really sick because he didn't sleep for a week or some amount of time, so I guess I assumed it was because the graphics took so long to make.

*checks Final Fantasy H*

FFH doesn't look like it has an A-rank average according to the site, so that 'certain A ranked game' is probably Ends of the Earth 2 with the edited FF5 walkabouts. As far as I know anyway.

I wasn't going to name names, but since you've already done it:

There's more that's ripped than that. Look at the forest on the world map. And the mountains as well, though disgustingly discolored. I'm sure there's more, I just haven't gotten far enough yet.

As I understand it, Vikings of Midgard's graphics were declared public domain from day one, you could use those without any hassle, I'm sure.

.........................

FFH is about 50% ripped, I think. The enemy graphics are largely from the SNES FF games.

I know, but might as well make a distinction of what game we're bashing and what game we're using as an example, heh.
