Just two thoughts.

1. I have the feeling there are more contests here in a year than there are members. Too many contests?

2. Wouldn't it be better if the contests would focus on only one aspect of game development instead of just asking to make a good game overall? If the limitations are bigger the quality would be much better in that aspect and is also a good training. For example a contest only for good dungeon design (no story, graphics and music are unimportant). Or a good for best graphics. Or a contest for best battles.

Perhaps, but let's wait to see the turn-out before deciding that's a bad idea. It also gets people making games, which is never a bad thing.

And I won't touch your other one.

It's exercise and it keeps you fit in the game-making process.
By entering contests, you should also find that your skills will improve, as they do when working on any other game.

Oh, and the flood (haha!) of new games that we get from them is also usually sometimes super awesome.

I've always thought we hold way too many contests.

The question is, if we stopped having contests would people actually work on their "epic" games (come one, everybody has one in progress for years)? If not I see nothing wrong with it, even if we are producing mass quantities of mediocre games.
