That's right, folks! Everyone's favorite month of build-up to a resounding nothing is here again! From the first minute of October 1st to the last minute of November 1st, you and competitors around the world will scramble to make a spine-tingling masterpiece of game design.
Quick rundown of the rules:
As always, the entries will be judged in three categories, Originality, Fun, and Scariness on a scale of one to ten. The winner will be the one with the highest overall score. Overall score will be determined by
Code: | (Originality+Fun)+(Scariness*2)/3 |
Anyone registered on the forums is allowed to vote.
You can't vote for your own game, but because of that each game will be given one "perfect score" vote.
You have to play and vote for every game.
The contest "officially" starts at 12:01 AM October 1st in whatever time zone you're in, and ends at 12:01 AM November 2nd. If you want to start early or already have, that's fine so long as the voters know about it and can judge accordingly.
There is no prize, just the satisfaction of victory.
I hope I didn't forget anything. Any questions/suggestions/comments?

Suggestion: GIVE A PRIZE
Comment: May as well raise that 2 multiplier to 2 million as the result will always be ZERO. An OHRRPGCE game that can genuinely scare people? Are you mad, sir? There's no way. Out of your mind. |

Re: Suggestion: Prizes are for the weak!
As for the comment, I think an OHRRPGCE game that is genuinely scary is highly possible. Like I said last year, we've got layers, sound effects and music, all of which are a big help towards a scary game. Besides, if it was an easy goal, it wouldn't deserve a multiplier.
Manipulating a player's emotions, be they happiness, anger, sorrow or even fear is an important part of game design, and fear poses a particular challenge as the things that make a person afraid (Being unable to clearly see what is going on, being powerless to stop something, etc.) are things that tend to not be very much fun, requiring a particular level of balance.
Perhaps we could use this thread to discuss what it is that makes a game scary, since it's going to be some time before entries start coming in, and a friendly exchange of ideas might make everyone's entries better.
Which reminds me, Important Rules Clarification: All entries need to somehow be linked or posted in this thread. Host them on CP or don't, so long as everyone can get 'em. |

This might prove useful.
Just don't go overboard or copypasta on me, guys, or else you risk losing every ounce of your game's believability. Once it's gone to the point of narm, it's nigh-impossible to get taken seriously again in the same game.
Even so, it's a good insight into common things that induce fear in human beings. One of my favorites is the "Body Horror" trope. It's everywhere if you think about it, but think about it. Humans identify with other humans, so when they see something that's just a bit uncanny, BAM. You might've scarred them for life by simply making a hand grow out of a person's eyeball. |

I assumed that the reason that you made scariness count least is because it's too hard a goal, but this comment makes me think GIZ CAN'T ADD _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Again, a good idea, as long as you don't go overboard with it.
If it were me, I would make ONE moment of heart-pounding ear rape and no more than one. |

Pretty sure it's just missing parentheses.

I'm not sure why you need to divide by 3, though. Same result either way. _________________

Divided by 3 makes it an average. Kids LOVE averages. It's all I hear about when I chase the little scamps off my yard. "Whee, give us an average! We want averages!"
And how the heck does scariness count least? I admit, my 6th grade education has torpedoed my chances at fancy pants math, but by my figuring:
Code: |
Hachi's Mom.rpg
By Hachi's Dad
Originality: 9 - It's hachi who's the cheap imitation
Fun: 5 - She's fun, but also a classy lady.
Scariness: 10 - I had the misfortune of seeing her before she'd put her makeup on. There was no mercy!
(9+5) = 14
(Scariness*2) = 20
14+20 = 34
34/3 = 11.33
|
Jump scares CAN be effective, but it's also low hanging fruit. You can expect a lot of people to try it, which could desensitize the voters. It might be wiser to go for a more subtle option. |
