I remember back when I first used OHR, there were two great programs to help compose music for your RPG games in BAM format. Now that BAM is obsolete, has anybody thought of remaking Notate and Stephanie's PC Piano for MIDI music?

I would really like to make my own original music score, but lack the external MIDI devices to use the products listed on 'Music Utilities'. The PC Piano would be great to port over to FreeBasic, perhaps a more updated version which is easier to use.

Will BAM support ever be removed, or is it safe to actually use Notate and PC Piano to make custom music scores? I like OGG music, but it tends to increase the RPG's file size. I may consider on say, releasing two versions of my game, one with Synth music, and one with Digital music.

I think about making a new music utility sometimes, but I have so many other projects I want to work on, I keep hoping somebody else will do it first :)

BAM support will not go away, so it is safe to keep use. It gets converted to MIDI when you play it.

It is safe to assume that no feature that works now will ever go away in the future. (Not on purpose anyway! If something stops working, it is a bug!)

By the way, Stephanie's PC piano actually supports external MIDI keyboards... although I have no idea if DOSBox supports them.

Stephanie is my cousin Brian's wife. She is (among other things) a musician. Brian wrote that program as a gift for her when they were still dating.

I wrote an poem generating program for my fiancÃ© (a.k.a. "rhymes with Beyonce").

Ever hear the "alligator soup" poem?
I generalized it to the form:

Alligator [food]
Alligator [food]
If I don't get some, I think I'm gonna [verb]
Take away my [noun],
And take away my [noun]
But don't take away my alligator [food]

It would then sort through a library of nouns, foods and verbs that I compiled, and produce a poem for her. The result didn't rhyme or maintain any rhythmic flow like the original poem did ... but who cares?
This new awesome-ified version is titled "The generalized alligator food with potential consequences poem"

By far my favorite result was this:
Alligator loaf
Alligator loaf
If I don't get some, I think I'm gonna eat an alligator
Take away my human rights
And take away my dignity
But don't take away my alligator loaf

Maybe alligator loaf is heroin flavoured?

There's an online music notation software called Noteflight. it's free to use, so you can get started right away. the one caviat is you don't get too very many MIDI instruments on the free version, but you'll have enough for what you'd be looking for. (ie, full band minus percussion, orchestra, guitar, and two basses) I'm using it for my game, and it exports very well.
