Here's an idea that has probably already been suggested.
Instead of creating a full game, make several walkabout graphics, monsters (w/stats), maptiles, items, and a few basic attacks. Then, use the process you would use to distribute a game. Don't put a password on the file.
Then, those among us who may not be good at pixel art, but have good ideas for a game, can expand upon your kit to create an entire game.
Thoughts?

The idea's been kicked around a few times, but it boils down to a "Give a man a fish/teach a man to fish" thing. If you've got a good idea for a game, bad graphics aren't going to get too much in the way of that, and with a little practice you can get to where you need to be. That said, I *think*, and you'll have to check with Fenrir to be sure, that Vikings of Midgard is designed to be that kind of a "Take a look at how I did it!" thing.

And don't forget there's an art forum where people might be able to help you learn.

Doesn't RPG Maker already kinda already do that standard? i remember looking at it once, and it seemed to have preloaded graphics in it. I could be just be mistaken, though, so don't take my word for that.

I used to have a copy of RPG Maker and yes, it definitely did that. Some versions also had pre-made heroes, enemies, attacks, and items.

Anyway, the whole point of Vikings is basically to be a source of free graphics; I have, following its example, released my own series free graphics (look at HamsterSpeak issues 43 and 45).

Even with available premade graphics, I think anybody using them would be worse off critically than somebody who drew badly.

I thought this was the whole point of Vikings, since it's now the pack in game and Wandering Hamster is not, to keep new users from thinking that WH's graphics were re-usable?

But if anyone wanted to do this they could just make OHR-friendly tilesets and walkabout sheets and release them under a Creative Commons or similiar license. No need to package it into an .RPG file

Content from Wandering Hamster is only reusable in games with GPL compatible licenses.

I agree that spritesheets is probably the best way for people to share graphics. A big ol' zip file of bmp files :)

I collected links to free sprite packs at 'Free Sprites'. I know that there have been other ones which I can't find. If you did a thorough search of CP's forums and gamelist I'm sure would find more.

How about the ability to import this big ol' zip file of bmp files in CUSTOM? And perhaps the ability to also export all spritesheets into a big ol' zip file of bmp files? This would make the process less intimidating for new users coming over from say RPG Maker to OHR.

Another RPG engine called ACK(Adventure Construction Kit) also supports kits.
