Heh, that's a pretty glowing review. Sounds like they were already familiar with it; did you ever advertise it much outside the community? I really hope you did, but I don't think I ever came across it elsewhere.
We haven't had a "top OHR games" vote in a long time, but I still voted SoJ as #1-2 last time, because it's both complete and lengthy unlike most other contenders...
But it's nice to hear you will be updating it further. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

I don't think I ever really did. I didn't even post about the Android release outside of here and SS, so I was surprised to see any 'external' site post about it. I'm also unfamiliar with that person, but somehow they knew about the dev time.
The most 'promotion' I remember is that a Russian magazine asked rinku way back if they could put SoJ on a cover disc |

I'm willing to wait. Don't worry. _________________ "There will always be people who will tell you they hate what you made, or like what you made, and will tell you that what you did was wrong or right."

I just discovered that I did add sound effects for steal success, failure, and no item to steal, though only global settings. I think I had planned to add per-attack overrides.
I really really hope we put out a release candidate for Callipygous this month, but there are serious bugs left to fix. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Got the game to play
Despite selecting "Skip proem" was still assaulted with about 45 minutes of introduction before I could actually get into the action
Found myself nodding and agreeing with the depressed/despairing NPCs
Found several healing items but couldn't figure out what "affirms health" meant in game terms and accidentally wasted them
Wasted the Temp HP items I found on the temporary "Wanderer" version of my hero
Had lots of trouble figuring out the combat system; everything felt like a slog and it didn't get much better once I started leveling up and learning new skills
Hit with a seemingly irrelevant cutscene taking place in a distant place between characters I hadn't met
Managed to brute force my way to a plant monster, got killed, then gave up _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

You definitely aren't meant to select "Skip Proem" and I don't why the option is given (maybe so you can skip it on a second playthrough) and I remember a bunch of confusion over it when the game was released.
I also remember being a bit confused by the battle system when I first played. I think the proem might give you a better (or more interesting) introduction to it, because you start out with 4 heroes with skills available. I do think that both the battles and the story do start out a bit slow and dull at the start of the game (the intro is too theatrical and I still don't understand parts of it), but both really grabbed me later. The game certainly isn't perfect. I think that one purpose of the proem is to be a more interesting introduction.
Being able to waste items on the Wanderer is an unfortunate bug in the game (blame the playtesters).
Typing this reply really makes me want to continue replaying the game, but I am so busy right now :( _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

So either I get 45 minutes of unskippable introduction with characters I don't understand thrown at me when I select a new game and choose to skip the "proem", or I get hit with 45 minutes of no action partway through on my first playthrough if I choose not to skip it?

Yeah, it's very excusable for many of the older versions of the game in a sense though. Now we can simply set the Items menu to not appear when based on a tag.
Not having a clear idea of what the items do from their in-game descriptions however would still be a downside.

It makes me think that if I ever have a whole day where I want to play an OHR game with absolutely nothing else to do and don't want to work on one of my own, I might start the game over from its "real" beginning. Most likely though I'm just going to wind up deleting it and forgetting about it. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

A bug in the upgrade process between engine versions broke a significant amount of attacks in the game. Please update your copy of the game ASAP to play the game as intended. |
