Do you have a bridled enthusiasm for science?
Well, take your bridles, and BURN THEM!

There'll be no need for bridle burning here!

I think word-to-word is a dead-end approach to machine translation of natural language. There is way too much information encoded in context for a word-to-word (and therefore context insensitive) translator to do any better than babelfish or google translate.
That being said, machine learning is awesome.
As is SCIENCE! |

I don't think that individual word-to-word translation is at all the point of those challenges. It's just a convenient way to reduce the size of the problem (and the task of scoring the competitors). The challenge is: examine a sentence and using that context determine what this word in it means, then spit out a translation as proof of comprehension. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

high-fives to anyone who explains exactly how scientists can turn tequila into diamonds! _________________ *snap*

I'll hazard a guess:
Use SCIENCE!
Distill the alcohol out of the tequila, and then put the alcohol under extremely high temperatures and pressures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_diamond#High_pressure.2C_high_temperature
This process uses oil - so really all we need to do is convert ethanol into a long hydrocarbon of some sort.
That shouldn't be too hard ...
I'm gonna guess that if you cyclically heat ethanol under high pressure and then let the system cool, the (C2H5OH) will start splitting into oil and H20, and the H20 could be distilled or density-separated from the system during the cooling component of the cycle.
If such a process exists, I don't know what it's called.
Maybe there's an easier way where you can use some bacterial enzyme to speed the process up.
SCIENCE!
Edit:
Is there a chemist out there who can tell me whether or not I'm full of it? _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation

Speaking of diamonds, I was interested to read recently that there is a liquid state of diamond. This is distinct from other forms of liquid carbon, and can only happen under very high pressure. http://www.physorg.com/news183044315.html |

Here's something called a Non-Newtonian Fluid: a material that acts like a liquid until force is applied, then it behaves as a solid. You can make one form of it by mixing cornstarch and water. Here's my favorite video of it (you may want o skip the first half of nothing but talking):

We're actually about to do this on my college campus for a traditional event called Springfest we hold every year. Needless to say, I'm excited |

This is such a cool concept that I decided to make it a huge part of the "Syzygy" universe.
