Actually, that was *Worthy* you were speaking of Flamer, but I do have a battle system of my own that resembles OHR Tactics, that has thousands of lines of code (thanks to the custom menu [surprise] that I have in there that lets you change classes for the four characters in the battle. Ask LeRoy about it, he saw the beginnings of it RPGExcel Tactics, we were GOING to call it, but I'm still deciding if it shouldn't just be something else. We had a really spiffy title screen, too... oops, going off topic.) Right, well anyway if anyone has any questions about making custom menus and battles and stuff, I think you guys know who to ask (which isn't just referring to myself, of course. Plenty of people here to ask, quit lookin' at me! Though I'm happy to help ) _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

I am in awe of people who plotscript their own battle systems.. The farthest I ever got in something like that was less than 1000 lines, and then I got so confused that I gave up. Still, it's worth the experience to try to program your own system... _________________ im realy ded |

Before creating my battle system, I had never fully appreciated the importance of giving each variable a good name. Correctly naming variables can make life a whole lot easier when trying to create a very large script. That was one problem I encountered when I first started. I used abbreviations too frequently and it got to the point that I had no idea what variable meant what.
After about 3000 lines in, I decided to change the name of all of my global variables. Imagine going through 3000 lines and finding and changing all of your global variables (you'de be amazed how many are needed to make a battle system)...

I can't agree with you more, Worthy. What a pain it must have been sifting through all that code looking for variables, oi. Luckily I've not had to do that yet, and I'm hoping I never will Gah, what a pain. _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

I'd think you'd use the global #s more than names in scripting battle systems... _________________ im realy ded |

Well it depends, Sephy. I use them as a fake array when dealing with monster HP, MP, and stats, but have ones I named for the heros, since you always have the same four (except they change class.) Then there're the other variables in the system you need that you have need of understandable names. _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

You know, a lot of text editors have a "find and replace" feature, where it will find all copies of a certain string and replace it with another string. _________________ Locked

Oh man...bad memories...
Tags...all written down...but all shifted off by +1...700 lines...AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!
Ok so 700 isn't that much, but this is the same day I WROTE all of them, so I was pretty tired.
For the record, something I'd like to see in the next OHR update would be a built in compliler. I think I'll go post that right now. _________________ But enough talk, have at you! |
