But if they choose the same heroes the heroes will have the same attacks and how will I have the attacks take the right items?

edit: I think I can solve this by only letting the person choose one of each class for their team. (there are 6 class and a boy and girl for each class so technically they can have two of each class)

Just have two copies of each class and each sex (thus two boy fighters, and two girl fighters) and do character selection with a script that makes sure to give the player the two separate copies of their characters. If the player wants a party full of fighters this way, he can still achieve it, but he will have to settle for taking two guys along with the girls. This will make 2sexes * 6classes * 2copies = 24 heroes, which isn't bad by any means.

O.K. but that means I will have to make two copies of all of the attacks won't I?

Yes, unfortunately.

EDIT: That's not that bad, really. In my system for Apono in Tales II, every attack he learns takes up at least four attacks (usually more) in the editor that do nothing but make sure he learns it properly, and uses any stat boosts that the enemy adds to its power, and then loses those stat boosts after the attack.
