|
|
these are the third annual human day contest rules.
it will begin december 1, with the announcement of the gameplay theme, and end on december 25.
you can use ANY game engine, or even pure program it, just as long as the judges can play the game.
planning ahead before the gameplay theme is announced is not recommended, because the game must revolve around a certain type of gameplay, which will be announced on december 1. for example, if the gameplay theme was 'platform game shooting game hybrid' it wouldn't help to have planned anything ahead of time.
the prizes:
*1st place - a copy of 'chris crawford on game design', delivered to your home address from amazon.com.
*2nd place - rinku reviews all of the games you ever made, including this game, in detail. these reviews will be published in the online magazine 'the heroic episode' and, if they are ohrrpgce games, on castle paradox.
*3rd place - a livejournal invite code.
*prize just for entering - a discreet copy of my 'rarest classic ohrrpgce games that you should play' zip file. this includes ohr games that almost none of you have played, including such masterpieces as origin, tremor, beyond destiny, the last job, and the last blitz.
WARNING: this contest does not have a good track record with prize delivering. neither the first year nor the second year prizes were ever given, for various reasons. however i fully intend to give away these prizes and purposely made them very easy to award so that what happened the first two years wouldn't happen again.
judging will be done by a secret panel of game designers.
the idea of the contest is this: a very weird 'gameplay mechanic / gameplay theme' is going to be announced. you then have 25 days to turn that into a game. it will probably be something incredibly hard to do, such as 'create a game about gossiping, not just a story about gossip, but the gameplay itself should be about gossiping, where the object of the game is to be the best at gossiping' (note: this is not the theme, but it might be this weird).
the intention of the contest is to act as an exercise to improve game design ability by giving a 'strange que' which will require the participants to stretch beyond the current reaches of games, to do what no game has yet tried to do.
teams are okay but are limited to 3 people per team. however, if a team wins, the team has to decide among itself who is going to get the prize -- i.e., i'm not going to buy three people the grand prize if a team of three wins.
no ripping of copyright material such as graphics or music is allowed. you can of course use free public domain graphics or music that are out of copyright or those that you get the owner's permission for. you can also naturally use any graphics or music you made for previous games if you like.
those interested, reply with your email. on nov 30 midnight i'll send the gameplay theme via email to you.
EDIT: the contest now has a website. some of the above rules are now outdated. go read the new information at http://heroists.cjb.net/humanday/ _________________ Tower Defense Game

Don't expect to win this one (well, we'll just have to wait and see...), but that entry prize is awesome. |

damn, the zip file contribution prize pack has "the last job," it's the best novel RPG i've ever seen. too bad i lost my copy of it way back when Zante closed.
I'm gonna have to see... i've got end of year parties, end of school parties, friend's brithday parties, part-time job, need time to contribute to the community challenge and need time to make some progress with my game... most of all mentioned happens between the 1st and 25th of december, I might not make this human day contest either... _________________ If we were a pack of dogs, IM would be a grand Hound, CN would be a very ficious little pitball, and Giz...well, it doesn't matter breed he is, he'd still be a bitch
(no offense to anyone that was mentioned) |

Can we form teams, or must the projects be taken on individually? |

good question: teams are okay but are limited to 3 people per team. however, if a team wins, the team has to decide among itself who is going to get the prize -- i.e., i'm not going to buy three people the grand prize if a team of three wins.
also, in case this comes up, no ripping of copyright material such as graphics or music is allowed. you can of course use free public domain graphics or music that are out of copyright or those that you get the owner's permission for. you can also naturally use any graphics or music you made for previous games if you like. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

Ah well, in that case..! mystah_b[at]hotmail[dot]com (me being paranoid...)
Good thing we can use previously-created material... I might get the opportunity to flaunt some of my gee-ord-jus tilemaps. (just being irritating) |
