reading books is a good way to get an idea on good stories.
and by books i mean fantasy or mythological books aimed at people ages 20 and above.
of course, non-fiction and sci-fiction books aimed at the same age group is good as well.

If this game is indeed your first game, I wouldn't worry too much about a storyline. Your first game, no matter how awesome the storyline is, will most likely not be a very good game. It has nothing to do with you personally, but you need to get used to OHR. Most people's, if not everyone's, first game is not of very good quality. If I were you, I would create a very simple game first with a very basic storyline, and try to use most, if not every, function in the OHR. This way, you can get used to OHR and you can really find out what the engine is capable of. Then, after you get used to OHR and plotscripting, try to make your ideal game.

That is just my opinion, and that is what I did when I first started using the OHR. I've been working with OHR for years, and I only have one of my games posted (which isn't even a full game)--it's taken me that long to master (or at least become familiar with) all that OHR is capable of, and I'm sure I still have more to learn.

I think better way of saying this is that your game will likely not be your best game. Case in point: Wingedmene was Komera's first game. You should never try to make a subpar game. If you need to learn plotscripting, do something like RRRRPG.

Not many people are artists, including myself. Nothing can help you with that except practice, lots of it!

The pixelation tutorial (mentioned on another recent thread) as well as many OHR Weekly articles could help you graphically.

Also, studying other games is possibly the best way to learn. If I see a graphic that partically speaks to me, I usually zoom it up and print it out to study (I have pages upon pages of Final Fantasy 6 monsters)

Yes, that pixelation tutorial helps a lot! Whoever brought that up in another thread, thank you!

The best way to learn what to do and what not to do in game making is to learn by experience. At least that's my opinion.
