My band just finished recording some of our new tunes, and we're currently in the process of mixing. The mix we have now is something we're all pretty happy with, but we're trying to get a bunch of opinions, so I thought I'd let the Castle Paradox community weigh in.
Feel free to comment in any way you please, but remember the songs are set in stone; the mix is what may change. So, the feedback that would be especially helpful is things like, "Man, the bass is way too loud here," or, "Vocals seriously need to come up," or, "Dude, what's with all that kick drum!?"
So, without further adieu:
Apartness
Axes in the Attic
The Fox in the Penthouse
Mountains (This one is a remake of one of our old songs, "The Mountains in France do the Bonebag Dance," which you may or may not remember)

mountains - i'll just say the sound quality is a lot better than before. i liked the beginning of this one, but after a while it seemed like it was moving too fast. there're a lot less vocals in it which was sad, but the guitar at the end made up for it.
apartness - i didn't much care for the beginning, but the rest of the song i enjoyed, especially the vocal parts, the beat was nice. there are some parts in which you can't hear the vocals because the guitar drowns it out.
axes in the attic - the first few minutes are kind of average, and not a whole lot sticks out. at around 3:30 it began to pick up, which i liked, but then it died down again. i didn't like the ending too much, either. it sounded like it was going to lead up to a 'big bang' or something, but instead died off. i was hoping for the big bang.
eraser - nice start. a bit repetitive and dragged on. nothing really stuck out. it's one of those songs that you could chop off a minute and still get the same effect.
fox in the penthouse - acted like eraser. dragged on as well, but it was entertaining enough to listen to.
this will be everything still stands as my favorite song from you guys (as well as being in my top 10). _________________

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure anyone would even remember our other stuff, let alone like one of our old tunes so much! It means a lot to hear you say that. Sadly (as I guess you noticed from your comments on some of the other tunes), we're kind of moving in a different direction, and don't even play "This Will be Everything" live anymore. Of course, our vocalist is moving to New Orleans this summer, so there's going to be some major restructuring going on, and soon we'll no doubt be moving in a different different direction. Maybe it'll also be a good time to bring "This Will be Everything" back into our live repitoire...
Anyway, I agree the vocals are too quiet in some parts. I'm also noticing that for this export, Garage Band included some of the tracks we had muted for some reason, so when I upload the finished versions, they should sound cleaner at least.
Anybody else have any thoughts on the mix?
P.S. I really think "Eraser" is worth another listen. It's filled with tons of sweet ass poly-rhythms, I promise! |
