Happy

anyone who accesses pixelation may have seen this link, but it's great enough to deserve additional promotion:

GFXZone galleries

what i want to highlight is that there is a lot of *very* high quality 256-color art there. and also some very high quality lower colorcount images (like pryzmystan -- 16 colors). i go there if i feel artistically uninspired (or i refer to the pics i've saved from there); usually i can find creative inspiration there, but also it is good for seeing techniques that i can try to figure out and reproduce the effects of.

an example:

(56 colors)

which is pretty representative of the level of quality of the art there. i think these considerations of minimizing color usage and maximizing accuracy are particularly relevant to OHRRPGCE, given the palette limitations of it.
Friend's games show an understanding of the ways to apply many of these techniques and stylisms, and the advantages of them. they are relevant even for things as small as maptiles.

now i am going to pimp specific artists' galleries because they're particularly good:

Cougar
Lazur
Unreal
Prowler
Dzordan

to ensure this post is impeccably ontopic, here are some of my recent efforts at reproducing some of the shading style used in many of those pics:

http://www.gazler.com/users/neo/eyeinthesky.png -- linked due to largeness and multicoloredness. i wonder if anyone here knows the song the picture is about?
