I went to bed last night and Pitch Black had 470 something hits. I woke up and it has 570 something.

Is there anyway to check who has downloaded a game? I'm suspecting some foul play (or maybe a sudden Pitch Black urge...Raspberry!). As I've stated before, download count means nothing to me (reviews, however, do), so I am genuinely curious as to who downloaded Pitch Black 100 times in one night.

Looks like Pitch Black is going to take the number 5 spot away from me. I'm still wondering where the heck Dimensions 1 is getting all its hits, though I'll chalk it up to outside marketing.

I'm fairly confident that's happened quite a bit with quite a lot of games. I've talked to a person who said they downloaded FFH a few times, and even I'll admit that people've used my connection on more than one occasion to grab it and Timestream Saga. That's the fun of LAN parties Big grin - you get to advertise your games to your personal buddies. This also makes something like the fourth time I've downloaded Halloween Quest, since I keep deleting it after playing it.

Perhaps instead, it would be possible to only list one download per IP adress when its downloaded. Or rather just list unique IP adress hits instead of number of downloads? That would be significantly more accurate.

I have a theory about this one (that I actually devised this morning. I was also curious and went around investigating Raspberry!) but I'm going to shut up about it until I'm sure.

Indeed, that would be most excellent. The only downside with teh first one is that if a game is updated it won't get the extra hits if someone had the old version and decided to upload the new one. The second option would also be nice, but not as easy to look at as simply download counts. This would also cut back on cheating *coughVladcough*, which is always a good thing.

As for it taking the 5th spot...thats actually why I noticed. I was actually first really confused...I remembered when I checked last night I had either 470 or 570...I couldn't remember. I had to go to JSH's Review thread (where I noted he was downloader 400) to recall.

Most weird. SOMEONE CLICKED PITCH BLACK 100 TIMES. CONFESS AND BE SAVED! *starts his own Salem Witch Hunt on CP*

You mean this? (Taken out of context probably)

I'm not going to say there's any foul play going on, and certainly cheating the top 5 is a bannable offense according to CN. Chances are, we've all downloaded our favorite game once or twice, simply because its our favorite, so in a sense the top 5 is really anotehr gauge of how much people like (or hate) a certain game. If you see it keep shooting up to the point where it almost overtakes Arfenhouse though, THEN I'd suspect foul play.

That would actually be kind of funny, since I originally said AH was the only one that could beat FFH in the hits. I may have been wrong in that assessment.

EDIT: I just noticed it's in the #4 slot now. I went ahead and clicked on it and it jumped a bit. Running Norton to see if thsi damn computer has a virus or java hack or whatnot that MIGHT explain it. I'd doubt it myself, if I hadn't seen it. I'd like someone to confirm whether a download accellerator would have any effect on the totals?

I'd ALMOST suggest we organize a form of protest of even having the top five by continuously downloading it until it has like 80000 hits or so (but that would be just cruel). Really, it's nice to have, but couldn't we replace it with 5 randomly selected games for download? Seeing the same 5-6 gets old after a while, and having random ones pop up would be incentive for our reviewers to pick one.

*prepares to click on Bliss 80,000 times*

Oh wait, you said ALMOST. Heh.

The only reason I dislike top downloaded vs top reviewed is that if a game its top downloaded, even if it isn't as good as other games in existance, people still tend to download games with higher download counts (I mean, if 3,300 people liked FFH, I'm pretty much sure to like it, right? Edit: Didn't mean this as an offence, Fenrir (in regard to my "other games that are better"). I was actually thinking of Pitch Black itself when I wrote those remarks. Raspberry! Just covering my bases. Happy). Personally I'd rather see the top reviewed expanded to 10 games rather then five, or expanded to include all A range and possible higher B range games. Even if a reviewer isn't creditable in his/her reviewing, it is more then likely this person is more creditable at picking out a good game then the idiot masses who clicked Pitch Black five times between when I posted this and now because it was up there.

Ok, ranting. Oops. There have been some guests on all morning, and when I checked up on one it said "downloading a game" and Pitch Black got another hit...hmmm....

But, yeah, if it goes a bit extreme then its definatly someone screwing with it.

Oh yeah, I also liked the idea of five random games showing up. The only downside is there are almost 300 games, probably 200 actually have some files, and probably only 50 of those are even worth downloading. But still...it sounds like a neat idea. Maybe if it were updated daily to keep it "fresh" or something. I mean, those who are top-hitters KNOW their games are top hitters...

Ok, blabbing on now. Raspberry! Off topic, did anyone notice we currently have 299 games and 199 reviews? Thats totally awsome, I am taking a screen-cap. Big grin

Well it was about time it got retired from the list anyway... Having an FF rip off taken off is well worth it, even if it IS mine. There's one other possibility we haven't considered.

What is tommorrow's date?

Really? 'Cause I've kinda been wondering myself. I mean, I know a lot of people liked playing it and stuff, but I haven't advertised it on other boards or have it linked to from anywhere else. And it currently only has a C+ Review too (Which should be B- since the author informed me of some changes but you can't exactly change reviews right now Raspberry! ). So I dunno.

I do know that quite a few are from the Hamster Republic game list link, from back when I added and updated it. I think that added about 100 downloads or something.

Over the course of the past year and couple months, the downloads have just added up. I mean, if you think about it... 580 downloads isn't really all that much over the course of a year. So I don't really think it's all that suprising for D1. It gets a hit or two every day or so it seems.

I've downloaded D1 a couple times myself though, when I was at other computers. A couple times at a friends house, a few times at a school... But not enough to really make a huge difference...

I thought you linked it from your site, but I found you host it yourself. There goes that theory. Raspberry!

Likewise. I think I've downloaded PB at least five or six times myself, mostly because I deleted the readme file and I couldn't update without it
No, no, no...

Actually, I was thinking of a B+/A-. Oookay... Don't underestimate D1 Big grin

Hmm... Where could all of the PB downloads have come from? That's really odd... I don't suspect 'foul play' so much as just generally 'brilliant' computers. Really -- these things do the oddest stuff for no reason sometimes. Like...maybe a system timer got set really low so that some downloads were registered 20-30 times.

Er...not that I know what I'm talking about. Yeah. Just...don't mind me.

That's a possibility. But, 100 downloads don't usually pop out of nowhere unless there is the words FINAL and FANTASY in them. Ha ha ha! And besides, you have a good point Mr.B. Although, I suspect someone is at foul play on that game. It was good, but was it good enough for someone to click it that many extra times?!
