I went to Best Buy the other day and (among other things) asked them about a portable sound recorder that can transfer sound clips to my computer in MP3 or WAV format. The rep told me he didn't think anything like that existed.
Any help? Do I have to get a really long microphone cord? I'm thinking of doing some piano recordings. I have an electric keyboard, but it's just not the same. _________________

Well, they've made DVD recording video cameras, so I'm sure this exists. If all else fails, I have two suggestions:
1: Go buy/build a small, cheap computer or PDA or something and use it to record. They come pretty small, so that should work.
2: Just buy some extra hardware and hook a tape recorder to your computer... I'm not sure how or what, but I'll tell you when I find my old hacking junk. This might not work, because you could end up spending a good deal of money on a new sound card, audio cables, special software, etc. if you don't have the right stuff. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

Actually, I could take my computer downstairs. I feel dumb for not thinking of that now. (In my defense, I didn't have my own computer when I started wanting this device.)
A reasonable PDA might also work, but I don't own one. _________________

Actually, if you care, they do make such devices. Typically, though, they're only made for recording voice rather than anything audio, and as such have a lower quality sound than might be acceptable (although a good touchup program could eliminate that problem easily). So the real problem is, then, to see if moving the computer is worth the trouble versus buying a hardware that may not stand up to the necessary fidelity (then again, your microphone on your PC might not be up to the task, either)...

Don't go the Best Buy for recording, for God's sake. They are an electronics retailer, not a music shop :{{{{
Head over to your local music store and ask around. Digital recorders are getting cheaper and cheaper and higher and higher quality. Portable ones DO exist, in fact they're often fairly cheap. Check www.musiciansfriend.com or a similar site.
You could also do the old record onto tape -> send to comp via microphone jack thing - plug the tape recorder's line out/headphone jack into the comp's microphone or line in jack. The sound quality won't be as good that way, though.
EDIT: looking that site, ew. Expensive. Go tape recorder for now. Although I swear I've seen mp3 players with mic jacks. Perhaps get a Minidisc player - they have near-CD quality audio, although then you'd still have to transfer it to your comp via mic jack. _________________ UP DOWN UP DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT A B START |

Some of you are suggesting sending a tape into the computer via a microphone jack.
Does anyone know of a way to get a STEREO signal into the computer from a stereo tape? Besides doing one side at a time and then trying to sync them somehow on the computer (something which requires software I do not have, or an incredibly lucky click). |

By two coincidences yesterday, I happened upon someone who's interested in doing some recording for me. I'll see what kind of quality I can get from just a computer microphone; if it's not good enough, I'll see what he can do for me.
Anyway, my repertoire of songs ready to be recorded is:
Angel's Fear (Seiken Densetsu II - Theme) Passing Sorrow (Final Fantasy IX) Another World (Chrono Cross) My Home, Sweet Home (Final Fantasy V) The Only Friend (Brave Fencer Musashi) Theme from Final Fantasy IV You're Not Alone! (Final Fantasy IX) Frontier Village Dali (Final Fantasy IX) Sadness - reborn (Final Fantasy V - Arranged by M. Huang
All of them are my own arrangements except for the Fantasy Reborn piece (which is available on his website if you want an idea of my skill level). I'll try to get a demo track online in the next few days. Any preferences? _________________

That was an exellent peice. You have a very high skill level. Im guessing you have passed your grade 8.
I play piano too. But my oh my... Not like that. I shall need quite a while to practise before I can get something like that right. Nice expression and tone.
Now how was that recorded? How does this other guy record his music? _________________

You know it wasn't me playing it, right? My brother suspects he's using an electric piano. If that's the case, he could use a MIDI cable. That's my best guess.
I've got a baby grand and an upright. The baby grand has a few keys out of tune, but gets better sound, so I'd be using that for most of my recordings. _________________

I used to be able to play like that...
Every day, I would sit at the piano, nearly an our at a time, just playing...
Every Teusday, I took lessons...
Every time my teacher had a concert, I always brought something nobody had ever heard and everybody loved...
And I drew the cover for the programs, and I recieved lots of complements...
But then I turned nine.
There wasn't any money, and I couldn't continue to pay for my lessons...
And I grew shy and tried not to be heard...
But every time I struck a key, someone knew...
So I soon stopped playing altogether...
And I lost my skill and my knowlegde of theory...
And quickly school ruled my life...
I couldn't find any time to enjoy myself...
And then I joined the school band.
My director was amazed...
Out of all his students, I was suddenly the best...
He gave a test on music theory, and I was the only one to pass...
I got 100%...
I became the most highly respected percusionist...
I even got an certificate for being the best...
But those days ended, once again.
Well, I hope you succeed in your great quest for the mic. You could always go wireless, I just thought, so you might be able to save a bunch of work and go buy some sort of wireless doohickey. It should be cheap enough, if such a thing exists. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

If it doesn't exist, I should make one and market it for millions. _________________
