I'm doing a presentation on Sheep Rancher in a couple of weeks. I'd like concept art and voice actors. I think I've got the voice actors lined up, but I'd like a little more concept art.

Post here your concept art for Rancher Sam and the evil wizard Ovelion. Winners not only get their character featured in the upcoming Sheep Rancher, they will also get a ($5-10) cut of the cash prize that I'm going to take like candy from a baby when I sweep this contest I'm in.

Note that if the game is eventually published with your character design(s), you may receive royalties, if applicable.

Rancher Sam is the returning hero from the OHR classic. For the new character design, I want something that says both "wizard" and "farmboy."

Ovelion is the villain character who wants to turn everyone into sheep. He's an evil genius, but as Sam says, "For an evil genius, he's not very bright..."

A note to all potential entrants: I'm looking for design rather than artistic talent. Thus, it doesn't matter if you're not that great at shading or coloring, but I would like at least one sketch per design to be colored, since color is a big part of character design. Feel free to submit multiple designs per character and multiple sketches per design.

Also, as a final note, I reserve the right to deny the prize to all entries. I'll be the sole judge of this contest, since I'm using this for my own purposes.

The deadline for this contest is the morning of March 31, 2005. I will announce the winner(s) at that time.

Here's one for Sam (I don't know what he originally looked like though). It might be too much farm boy and not enough wizard.

He's got a somewhat pointy straw hat, a denim cape that's a piece of his overalls, and a staff. And maybe his gloves are mildly wizard-ish.

I've never done this kind of shading before but I wanted to try it out. It looks pretty good I think. Though you can probably tell I didn't go overboard on quality as far as the art goes.

I'll probably try another one later that'll be a bit more interesting. Also it'll probably have more poses and perspectives and such (actually I think I'll do that later for this one too, it's probably not too useful right now).

To Iblis: Yeah, I think the shading technique you used is widely called "cross hatching", but I could be wrong. I used that technique in mine too. Thanks.

My submission~ It lacks color. It also lacks detail, because I took a picture of it (no Scanner on hand, and I want to let you know I care enough to not waste time looking for one).

This is Sam. I sort of like the glasses and sly smirk. The hat is like a part straw hat and part wizard's cap. So it's a straw wizard's cap? You have the final say in all of these, so meh.

Yeah. Ouch. Sorry about the camera effect...

I also sort of did a rough sketch of his enemy, Ovelion. He's a bearded man who wears a bull ram's skull as a hat.

Of course, he fits the "coo coo" description, wouldn't you say? Also; and it's hard to tell; he has a controller in his mouth and is nibbling on it. My idea was that the controller is what turns people into sheep. I think the prospect of him "nibbling" the controller shows both mental instability and blatant disregard for the lives of others. Woudn't you agree? Perhaps this wasn't your original plan, so maybe it's just something that came to me...

And here is a new face profile of Sheep Rancher Sam.

(Side note) Yes! A ghotee and side burns. Ghetto! And the general design is very reminiscent of Black Mage in ways...
Ask any questions you feel are necessary, Moogle.

Conclusion~ Drawbacks aside, I'd say the pics turned out neatly. Not as good as I wanted, but that is to be expected.

Once again, sorry I had to use a camera, man. Sad...

I don't know where this comes from, but it is most likely a remix of something... If anyone could be so kind as to say where they think it came from, that would be sweet. I love this song's mood.

[EDIT] It's from "Earth Bound"!!! No wonder I like it's mood the mood so much. It would be awesome in Sheep Rancher...

Iblis: eerily close to my own concept design, except mine used sort of "robe overalls"

Leroy: I cannot friggin' see Ovelion

RMZ: I like it a lot, but the sky doesn't contrast enough. If you'd played with more crayons as a kid, you'd know "sky blue" is much lighter.

Everyone: I'm not sure if this was clear, but I'm looking for a very cartooney feel for the game.

Moogle, I'll try and get a few more pictures up some time tonight, with Sam doing more dynamic looking things. And I'll change the background as well. I'll probally just make a normal old model sheet.

Moogle: Wait... You said cartoony style, right? Anime technically counts. But I assume you mean the rediculous kind of cartoony (cutesy tootsy), right?
