Hi folks!
Im thinking of making a game with two parallell storylines, and you swap between the two main characters when you do each storyline.
How hard is this going to be? Im guessing im going to have to write the whole thing out before doing it right?
But come on, how cool is that going to be, in the final battle you get to use both heroes, hell even Im excited over my own idea!

one question: how are you gonna fix the inventory problem. when you switch between the two hero's your inventory is going to be exactly the same, which could cause problems.

you should always write the story before starting out. helps you get somewhere with the project.

Just as a point of nitpickery, how can the plotlines be interlinking AND parallel? Doesn't parallel imply never connecting?

However, the best advice in this case, would be to create a timeline. Figure out where your character's are starting at. Let's say, Dash Rendar is on Kessel, and Han Solo is on Correlia. So, you'd have two lines, with a date, or some game time reference, with DASH RENDAR: KESSEL DAY 1 and HAN SOLO: CORRELIA DAY 1. Then, let's say, Han Solo gets hired to fly a load of rubber bat dongs to Hoth, and Dash Rendar leaves Kessel, and goes to Endor. We'd have HAN SOLO: EN ROUTE TO HOTH DAY 2, DASH RENDAR: ENDOR DAY 2. Han Solo arrives at Hoth the next day, and Dash Rendar makes the jump from Endor to Hoth. So, we'd have HAN SOLO: DAY 3 HOTH and DASH RENDAR: DAY 3 HOTH. Then you'd know to write up events for Han Solo that'd take him to Hoth, but get him slowed down along the way by something, and you'd have events that would take Dash Rendar briefly to Kessel and Endor, before finally arriving and meeting Han Solo and teaming up with him at Hoth. I really should note, that you probably oughta write the story first, decide who's going where and why, and then draw the timeline for reference, so you can figure out when the two meet.

Here's a tip:
Don't get TOO EXCITED about that final battle using your two heroes, or else you will just speed through the entire process of making the game in order to get to that final battle.......

Somehow I get the idea that this was inspired by Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits.

Not saying that your idea's not original. I'd like to see where it goes.

Walthros used the same inventory for all groups in that weird alternate reality part. It didn't disturb me much...

Im sure that is fixable by just changing the hero's walkabout picture and perhaps battle picture.
If you wish to change stats, just take the current stats and place them into a few global integers and replace with the desired stats and then when alternating again, just take the current stats and replace with the other taken stats.

That does not fix the inventory problem.

Also, what you said is much easier to do by swapping in and out heroes...

This reminds me of Suikoden 3 (where it was done really well). Go for it, I like interlinking storylines.

The inventory problem is easy to fix. Just remember what you have in globals, and delete the items.

Which I don't think anyone has done on the OHR yet.

I've thought about doing it too, but there are a few problems:

1. When the heroes meet, what happens to the inventory then? Are their items combined? But what if one party had 80 of a certain item, and the other had 70? When they got together, they should have 150, but they can't (I think). How is this explained?

2. If the heroes split up again, how is the inventory split up? It would be a very complicated script (it seems to me) to allow the player to split the items as they would wish.

This to me is a key weakness in the whole 'central item inventory' system that, as far as I can tell, Square has used for ever. I far prefer Enix's system where each character had their own 'sack', as it were. Perhaps this can be taken as a suggestion for those looking to improve the engine.

When an item hits 99, it goes to a new entry. Thus, you'd have too groups of that certain item, one x99, one x51.

And I had an idea like this once myself. Never did anything with it.

very good point. It doesn't matter now anyway Im out of OHR, way too much graphics to be drawn and storyline, etc, I dont think i can take another 40 hours of progamming and drawing.
Anyway if anyone makes a game with this storyline thingy tell me cos i want to play something really original.
Also the inventory problem is simple. When you swap out a character then swap them back in they keep all their inventory. I done it in "Rook" it works fine, inventory ain't a problem, man.
