Well, we haven't had a spriting contest in quite a while, and since Chaos Nyte is too busy at the moment to start one up, I'm taking it upon myself to get one going. Before I explain the contest, a BIG thank you goes to MultiColoredWizard for suggesting to me the idea of this contest.

As you know, the OHRRPGCE allows for four directions in regards to walkabouts: up, down, left, and right. Let's put a twist on this. Your job is to load up the OHR (or whatever program you draw your OHR walkabouts in) and, using the OHR limit of 20x20 pixels and 16 colors (one of those must be a background color...), make a set of walkabouts for a character. Here is the twist, however...the walkabouts must be isometric. I'm sure most of you know what isometric is, but for the few of you that don't know, a set of isometric walkabouts is a set that faces in the following directions: upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right. An excellent example of a game with isometric sprites is Final Fantasy Tactics. Another is Tactics Ogre. For more isometric examples, see the reference section after all this info. Make a full set that has two frames for each direction, like in the OHR, and use each of the four directions. You may create more than one entry if you wish, but only one will go up for voting (make sure you designate which one). Oh, you may use a GIF animation program to animate your creation, and what kind of character (or object) your creation is is completely up to you.

The contest deadline is one week from today (June 10th) Saturday, June 14th, so get cracking. If we don't have many entries by June 14th, I'll extend the deadline date. Afterward, I'll create a poll for you to vote on.

Happy spriting!

Tactics Ogre - Denim

These are the four directions your walkabouts should face in. If you guys need more references, post here and I'll add some.

Note: This board needs to support the tag...

Damn, we have to do it in OHR.

And you're welcome.

It would be interesting to see an OHR game that allowed movement in all eight directions... it's easy to make it do that and there's not much room for it to bug up. Never seen it though. I'll post back later once I've failed at my first nine attempts to make some so I can post the arguably worse tenth set of sprites.

Okay, they're done. The walkabout pictures are up here:

http://www.angelfire.com/wizard/blazeinc/filename.BMP

but they're tiny and it looks like there's almost no change between A and B frames. Because of that, I've also uploaded a little file for the OHR that has them at the size they look best at (OHR size, of course) and has them moving. It lasts about ten seconds. Ah well. It's up here:

http://www.angelfire.com/wizard/blazeinc/Filename.zip

It has the person moving diagonally, but it's not controllable and quits automatically. It just looks better this way than when its still, so check it out if you like.

Pretty good grafix, Blazes. You've got quite a nack for it!

Heh, thanks... I didn't think it was that good, but it was the best I could do. Oookay...

That, like my last walkabout, is different from my normal (and still, apparently inferior) art style, but this time because there's no way I could make my normal sprites diagonal. The OHR doesn't really seem suited for diagonal graphics anyway. Still, it would be interesting to see. There wouldn't be any passability problems because the script is just moving in two perpindicular directions without wait commands. It's unnaturally fast because it's both directions at once, but kicking the speed back to 2 for that part would compensate nicely. Hmm... the only real problem would be npcs wouldn't move diagonally, but that's not really a problem at all except for really nit-pickety people. Ah well...

Ah... Setu, you might want to change those for the contest. They're supposed to be isometric, and have both A and B frames for each of the four diagonal directions.

Setu, you may be able to fix your resizing issues in your resizing program. Look for resizing options and look for a drop down box that is titled "Resample" (it may not be called this, but it may still have what you need). In that box there should be several options; the most common are Bicubic, Bilinear, and Nearest Neighbor. If you find this drop-down box, set it to "Nearest Neighbor" and then try resizing. It should then look good. Compare a Bicubic resampling with a Nearest Neighbor one.
