Pretty much I just wanted to hear opinions from those of you who find certain things that OHRers do, to be annoying or idiotic... As an alternate, go ahead and post something that you do like to see... _________________ "Never sacrifice the thrills of living for the security of existence" |

I'd just say "don't ever use transparent text boxes." They make the text harder to read and are ugly. _________________ Locked

Usually, it's a good idea not to make your main character any kind of a "Chosen One".
For christ's sake PLEASE give people a reason to join your party, and make sure they have a style of combat that no one else already has. I hate games where someone just randomly decides they'll help you out. If you ask someone for directions to Pizza Hut, and he wants to get in your car and go with you, this man is a weirdo! He is not a hero! He will probably behead you and eat your wallet.
Make your enemies visually and gamefully interesting. Fighting birds and slimes and the usual jazz can get boring, so make sure you add your own twist to it, or better yet, try something entirely new with battles. |

~ Your game is not the One Thing to Complete People's Lives. You start out bad, but will get better.
~ It's ok to ask questions, provided the answer cannot easily be found in the FAQ.
~ For gods sake, read the HOWTO, a tutorial written by James Paige for the OHR.
~ Cliche's are ok, and they happen. Truely novel stories are far and few between.
~ Plan at least one dungeon/level/story event/whatever ahead, so you can maintain continuity. _________________ I stand corrected. No rivers ran blood today. At least, none that were caused by us.

~ Don't announce too early. Ideas are cheap, games are hard work, and few are ever finished.
~ Don't start a list when you only have one item to go in it. (Ahem) |

~ The included music is okay to use, either as fillers before putting in real music or if they actually fit, but don't abuse them. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

No, use Sandsea, but make sure you do what the HOWTO says about fixing it up _________________ I stand corrected. No rivers ran blood today. At least, none that were caused by us.

Okay, so right now we have - don't rip graphics, especially from ohr games, and then try and make your own game. unless of course you have permission.
- fan games are kind of iffy, make sure you do a good job with them.
- games involving the community, when the community doesn't want to be included.
- Do send your game to people to test before officially releasing it.
- Do proofread your games.
- Don't cram dialog for multiple characters into one box.
- Don't randomly switch font colors, especially to dark ones on a dark text box! People here seem to think dark colored fonts in dark boxeslook cool, but ultimately they're just a pain on the eyes, especially if you're reading pages of white text and are suddenly confronted with blue on blue. Also, be consistant on whether you use solid or transparent boxes, just because you can use both doens't mean you should.
- Don't get angry if your game gets a bad review, learn from it.
- Don't listen to members of the community that only have positive things to say at all times, they're utterly unhelpful.
- Don't let the early parts of your game be terrible compared to the later parts. The early areas of the game are the most important, and no one will play through them to get to the good parts if they're awful. Too many people make games with AWFUL intro stages and then learn how to make a better game as they go along, resulting in a half decent half awful game. Once you get better at working with the engine, go back and fix the start!
- read the entire thread before you post, to make sure you're on topic.
- be sure to read the dates on threads you're responding to.
- Don't just post "cool" or "I agree." These don't accomplish anything.
- Don't abuse emoticons either.
- Usually, it's a good idea not to make your main character any kind of a "Chosen One".
- For christ's sake PLEASE give people a reason to join your party, and make sure they have a style of combat that no one else already has. I hate games where someone just randomly decides they'll help you out. If you ask someone for directions to Pizza Hut, and he wants to get in your car and go with you, this man is a weirdo! - Learn to use the code and list tags, like this post demonstrated
