After checking out the roulette comics at The Surlaw Home for Squid and Walrus, I thought that the contest design was pretty interesting.
To have a chain of comic artists working on a single comic one at a time.
I also thought that this same type of contest would be pretty cool with game chapters instead of comic panels: One guy starts the game, sends it to next teammate whos sends it to next and so on until it's completed.
Sound interesting to anyone? |

Was attempted with a contest. It failed pretty miserably, but we didn't go chapter by chapter. (We each had two days to work on the game)
It might be interesting chapter by chapter. |

I guess we should make two teams. Any ideas for team names? |

Potentially interesting, but you'd have to put time limits on each developer or else the contest would take forever. Also, this would of necessity be fundamentally different from the Roulette Comic, since half the point of the RC is that you can't tell what's been going on up to that point, whereas there's no easy way to do the same thing.
I'd like to participate, but I'm going to wait to see what the exact rules are before throwing my chip on the pile. _________________

Let's try to have a short time limit, just as a test run:
Basic Rules:
1)Each chapter is a separate .rpg file.
2)Show off your own graphical style, don't rip graphics from any of the previous chapters.
3)Uh...make up the storyline as you go.
4)Games should be kept moderately short. Maybe 10-20 minutes per chapter?
5)*This rule would be the time limit* Seeing how summer vacation is nearing its end, we can either start within the next few days and have a one day limit, or we may have to extend it to one week once summer ends.
Post suggestions for other rules.
[edit]
Sounds good

You only get to see the previous person in the chain's rpg file. It gets sent to you and the person managing the contest (Who decides the theme?)
Also, I think there should be a main hero sprite that each entrant can use, just to keep some semblance of a plot. (And maybe a rule against killing off the main character) |

Ugh, I wanted to avoid this, but I guess there's no way around it. You realize it makes it impossible to make a real RPG, right?

I really disagree with this. You might make it a rule that you have to add at least two walkabouts and one tileset (or something), but the games won't look anything alike with this rule.

One day is not enough, especially given rule 2. If you remove rule 2, then only the first entrant will need a long time (since he will theoretically be making the most graphics).
There is also the question of gameplay consistency: let's say I decide to do something stupid and make my game a sidescroller. The next contestant doesn't understand my script, so he makes his game a no-combat adventure game. This is really odd, since it started out as a battle-driven RPG.
This isn't necessarily a problem, mind you, and could make things really interesting. The more I think about it, the more I like dinking around with the genre in the middle of the series. _________________

Okay, so one week per chapter.

I guess we should go with JSH's point to have a consistent hero graphic. But I really wouldn't want to see a really bad sprite used in every single chapter.
So, are we going towards the single game file for the entire book, or multiple ones per chapter?
[edit] Rules up to now:
1)Each chapter is a separate .rpg file. *Vote decides*
2)Show off your own graphical style, don't rip graphics from any of the previous chapters. You are required to add a minimum of one tileset, 1 walkabout, and enemy sprites as you please.
Should we have a folder of graphics for everyone to use? Remember that the chapters should be relatively small. There shouldn't be so much in a chapter that the first guy would need more than a week to make it.
3)Uh...make up the storyline as you go.
Not too much controversy here
4)Games should be kept moderately short. Maybe 10-20 minutes per chapter?
5)One week per chapter
6)You only have access to the previous chapter's resources.
Hmm...How about a single starting point for each team?
*Add/edit rules as needed*
Post your own rules, and we'll put the best of them together. |
