Fame! Glory! Prizes!

I'm looking for unique monster designs for the sequel to Darkmoor Dungeon. This is your shot. Here is what I'm looking for in a submission:

Monster graphics
  • Must be OHR-importable (16-bit color; of reasonable dimensions but not necessarily restricted to 80x80)
  • Must use the style of existing monsters (black outline and such; play DD for reference)
  • If the monster contains any "bits" or additional appendages, their graphics should also be submitted

Monster design
Tell me whatever you think is necessary to describe the fight. For example, you might describe the Earthwyrm battle as follows:

There are three holes in the ground. The Earthwyrm randomly burrows in and pops out. If you hit one of the holes, one of your characters dies.

It's not necessary to quantify their stats (e.g. "He has 800 HP"), but you may want to describe their stats more generally (e.g. "He has high defense but poor HP").

Don't get caught up in how the monster would actually be implemented in the OHR battle engine. That's important, so I'll repeat it in bigger letters: Don't worry about how to do it. Make it as complex as you want. The worst that'll happen is that I'll have to tone it down a bit.

Technical details
You may note that there are two categories described above. You may enter graphics without an accompanying design or vice versa. I prefer that you enter both, but I reserve the right to use one and not the other or to use them separately. I furthermore reserve the right to use nothing submitted in this contest.

By entering this contest, you yield your rights to your entry. You agree to let me use any of your submission as I see fit.

Winnership
  • Grand Prize: The author of the entry I judge to be the best will receive a free copy of the extras CD, which will be made available for sale jointly with the release of the game and will include selections from the soundtrack in MP3 format as well as some DVD-like bonus features.
  • Runners-up: Some of the contestants, including the grand prize winner, will be extended a playtesting position, yours to accept or decline.
  • Winners: As many entries as I accept will be included in Darkmoor Beckons and their authors will be listed in the end credits. In the case that no entry is accepted, the previous prizes will be awarded at my discretion.

Time
Cutoff for the grand prize and playtesting positions is Saturday, March 10, 2007. On this date I will announce winners. I will continue to accept entries for inclusion into the game up to the time of its release.

Ready? Go.

Joboyo

With a completely blank mind, this gentle spirit wishes to know everything about the world around it.
Like a child, it reaches out and strokes any object around it.

However, there is one vital fact that it has yet to understand:
Its Larger left hand is coated with the deadliest of poisons while its Larger right hand has the strength to crush the mightiest of men.

Gameplay: Pretty much obliterate it before its poison, or its huge pointer finger, kills your team.

The magnitude of the poison can also be stacked.

Oh, and offensive magic is completely ineffective (Spells that lower its defense and other stats still work against it, though).

Technically yes, but you'd be laughed at if the game wasn't absolutely utmost quality.

As far as I know, the only games to have tried it are Fat Frog and virtual school v0.5, but there are probably dozens more that didn't make it into the community mainstream. Sword of Jade was supposed to do what I'm trying to do, which is to make the game free and offer for sale an extras CD. There's a possibility that the game will be included on the extras CD (with MP3s integrated into the soundtrack), but in that case, you're still paying for the music, not the game itself.

so BASICALLY, the idea here is that people submit things freely to you for something you're going to sell? Well at least there is advertisement in the credits XD

Read his post again. The only reason he is going to have the game on the extras CD is because it will play MP3 versions of songs, otherwise the game is very free. You would want to buy the CD for the extras, not the game.

And with that, this means that we are freely giving away monsters and bosses for a game that is freely being distributed.

Okay, let's go over this one more time.

I'm not selling the game. It is free.

Users who enjoy the game or its soundtrack are encouraged to show their support by purchasing the extras CD, but there will be no extra gameplay for those who do so. The game is 100% free.

Furthermore, I have no need for your entries, as the game could easily be completed with what I have right now. This is an opportunity for you to contribute to a great game, get your name in its credits (which will otherwise not exist, since I am the sole contributor to the game at the moment), and have someone else figure out how to implement your crazy monster ideas. In return, I get the chance to expand my bestiary a bit.

See also NP's post immediately before mine. Once more, the game is free; also, I am not selling it.

Speaking of bestiary, did you get my monster design in the PM I gave you?

Yeah. I kind of wish you'd left out the technical details like I said, but I gathered that the point of the boss was to behave something like the electronic game of the same name.

Well, I put in the technical details anyway because, well...

I wanted to figure out how to make that kind of boss myself, heh...

Wait, wha? We weren't supposed to post the entries here?

Or is Newbie just being a self-conscious little wienie who won't show us what he's got?
