Hey, I had an idea...why not make a huge list of the different types of attacks? That way we could easily plan out special abilities and spells of characters. If you're like me, you like to plan out everything ahead of time...
Here's what I have so far:
Standard attack
Weak attack/strong attack
Random damage
MP damage
Strengthen/Weaken a stat
Poison, Regen, Stun, and Mute attacks
MP/HP cost, GP cost
Drain attack (enemy loses HP, hero gains HP)
Steal
Exceed the maximum of a stat
Flee
Cure damaged stats
Hunter attacks (bonus vs. monster type)
and, combinations of the above.
If anyone else can add to this list, it would be great. I know it'd help me out, thanks. |

Depending on how detailed you want to go, the list is potentially much longer. First of all, each of these can be altered by what base stat it uses for attacking. Not only having an actual stat, but things like "last damage to attacker" for revenge kinds of attacks, say. Or "Lost HP" for who-knows what kind of attacks.
Of course, there is also the question of targetting. Attacks that do something to one target versus those that target an entire 'team' versus those that target everyone in battle. This concept can greatly alter the use of any of the attack types you've listed.
You do point out HP/MP and gold costs, but with chaining you could make an attack 'cost' any stat. However, the concept of MP-cost-effectiveness is huge in certain kinds of RPGs. Were you around when I made my three-part article for Hamsterspeak? It might interest you. _________________ My first completed OHR game, Tales of the New World:

This sounds exactly like what I suggested in the Hero Design article a couple of Hamsterspeaks ago. Not that I have a monopoly on the idea -- I'm just saying you may want to check out the article. _________________
