If you edit a game in the nightly build of custom, can you still edit it again
and save it in the stable.

Yes. I'm curious why you'd want to switch back and forth, though.

In case there is some horrible bug in the nightly and I want to switch back.
That and I am just curious.

Would you recommend that I use the nightly or the stable to make my game?

I'd recommend the stables personally. I've had significant issues with the nightlies in the past. It's up to you though: if there is some feature in a nightly that you are desperate to have, go for it.

Usually you can edit a game with the nightly and then go back to the stable version-- but not always. Sometimes new features require changes in the RPG format.

If you choose to use a nightly, and you encounter a serious bug that makes you want to go back, you should go to http://gilgamesh.hamsterrepublic.com/nightly-archive/ and find the newest nightly that doesn't have the bug.

That way you minimize the risk of backwards compatibility problems, plus when you report the bug, you can tell us which version it first appeared in, which often makes it easier to track down the problem and get it fixed.

i'd have to agree with this. one nightly changed ALL my attack captions and now i have to rewrite all 116 of them. if you really need to use a nightly at least use one thats half way threw the production of the release or more to prevent FATAL ERRORs.

so far I have only use the nightlies for no more than 10 min. just to take
advantage of some of the new graphics capabilities (mark and clone)
I can't think of many other features I saw that I needed, but I only really looked at the graphics. Would you think I would have any problems if
I continue doing this?

You're welcome to keep using it; just be aware that there is always a risk. To be fair, the newer nightlies seem to be far more stable than the old ones were. Also, you'll probably want to make sure the game runs in a stable version of the OHR if possible. Even if you get around any stability issues with Custom, Game can be an entirely different problem.

Mark & Clone alone is worth any potential bugs. It is just too good a feature.

There's a risk in swapping back and forth between Custom versions. It's something we've largely ignored and assumed users don't do, I think, so I can't really say how bad the effects can be, but I'm guessing that only major changes might cause damage.

Current nightlies are nearly identical to what will be released as Werewaffle, because it is basically finished. The remaining release-blocking bugs are all usability bugs.

Typically, there are quite a fair number of often horrible bugs continually introduced in SVN that are fixed soon after. I only remember one or two data corrupting ones, but the number of people who might have downloaded a nightly at just the wrong moment always worries me. On the other hand, the nightlies of course contains lots of fixes for bugs that other people are stuck with (and complain about) for months. We seriously need to release more often to make stables more satisfactory. This delayed release is mostly my fault.

For my personal use, there's no doubt: nightlies are way better than stable releases. But that's because I can judge which nightlies should be avoided, and which parts of the engine might be unstable.

When exactly was this? There's a bug report for this ('' . bug_title('536') . '') that's still lingering open, though I assume it's long dead.

If you update the Quaternion jade .rpg file to the latest version at some point, there's random data in the description fields.

I always assumed that was due to how many changes/ non-zero'd data the file had gone through.
