I'll tell you what I've learned: I can barely stand playing RPGs.

The discussion you jumped into is about cliches (or I'm assuming they were), not games copying specific features from each other. You know, saving princesses, evil warlords, dragons, magic, heroes that must always use a sword, etc... I get the feeling you were never on the same page, because of the definition of cliche.

So yeah...

Cliche doesn't only refer to story for me and there are also cliches for sci-fi RPGs and not only fantasy ones. It can be anything from "hero overslept at the beginning of the game" over "round based battle system" to "if you open a treasure chest you get an item" and "there's no good reason why treasure chests are where they are". Or even "quests are always about killing monsters, finding items or talking to certain NPCs".

So if you copy a gameplay cliche you are automatically copying a game feature.

You got me there. It is technically copying in that respect...

Now prove to me that this is a bad thing if done well enough. Sure, it's not as good as a fully original game, but there are many times where it isn't bad enough to make a game worthless.

Ooh, burn. But unless you're inventing an entirely new genre, you're going to be "copying" mechanics from existing games, and -- wait, what was the point of this discussion?

I absolutely loved playing chrono trigger. That memory keeps my hope for RPGs alive. Plus it's a great place to practice scoring. If it weren't for the projects I've taken on here, I wouldn't be where I am. Hell, I may have never even picked up midi.

Um...I have something to say about cliches, they come in 3 flavours:
Plagerism,
Parody and
Research.
Plagerism is the bad cliche, its when someone totaly rips off someone elses work,
Parodies are based on something and may be commical about it.
And reaserch (which is what most people do) is when you gather information from several different games, give them a unique twist, and place them in your game accordingly.
I mean RPGs like Oblivion (well action RPG) takes elements from several games and books, anyone ever got Umbra for example?:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormbringer
3..2..1 whoa...look at all those game referances....
yes I could go on all day about how Oblivion (almost) plagerises Mr.Moorcock.

Well, I'm yet to release a game. My first fully released game, however, should be pretty good. I've been developing it for 4-5 months now. Hopefully, I'll have enough info to post more about it later.

But that's not to say I haven't had other project before. I romhacked 5 levels of Mega Man, and the result was pretty professional-looking. I graphics-hacked the original Super Mario Bros so the graphics looked like you were playing on a computer from 1978. I did a very serious complete overworld hack of Zelda (http://geocities.com/kaguzigames/) but only released a demo. I did a few other NES graphics hacks. I started making an RPG on OHRRPGCE about 10 years ago, but lost the project. I made several hour-long RPGs in RPG Maker 95 and RPG Maker 2k, but I never finished them, and thus never released them. I got really serious with a project 2 years ago, made a good solid 2 hours of RPG gameplay, tons of enemies, tons of graphics, but I think I lost that project as well (it may be backed up on a CD somewhere, but whatever). I've done pixel art for years as a hobby as well.

So, yes, I do think my first game will be really good.

But only because I've been fucking around for 10 years making half-finished games and never releasing anything because I knew it wasn't good enough. This time, I'm in it for the long-haul.

That's all good, but not really the point of the thread.

Have you learned anything that can help actual newbies?
