it is already time to start testing and stabilizing for the next release, codename werewaffle. I am hoping to be able to release before the end of February.

Windows installer builds here: ohrrpgce-win-installer-werewafRC.exe

And of course, testers may want to keep up with the nightlies too!

Oh my God, already? What new features can we expect this time? (Please say a higher item limit...)

The nightlies update the whatsnew.txt file as well, so you can see features and bugfixes as they're added.

Code:
WHAT IS NEW?

??? ?? 2008 [werewaffle]

  * New Features
    * Mark/Clone brush tool in the sprite editor an the maptile editor.
      Mark a rectangular region of a sprite and then use the clone tool
      to duplicate it. [James Paige]
    * Press F5 in the browser to refresh the listing, and to fetch the
      names of all drives (under Windows); this is no longer done
      automatically as it was too slow.
      Press backspace to go up a directory. [Ralph Versteegen]
    * New default Master Palette for new games. [NeoTA, Everybody]

  * Bugfixes
    * Bug 585: Curative items used wrong attack after being arranged
    * Custom now respects your chosen UI colors everywhere [James Paige]
    * Bug 590: default death sound effect played after every hit
    * Attempting to display a blank global text string, or the "fail"
      message in certain cases, would crash under Linux, and "fail"
      wouldn't display under Windows [Ralph Versteegen]
    * Importing a screen/tileset with a new master palette no longer
      blacks out all UI colours.

  * New Plotscripting Commands

  * Stuff only Developers Will Notice

  * Vikings of Midgard

The new palette was added today. What I like is that the old palette is assumed to be a custom one and does not get replaced for games already using it.

The downside to more frequent releases is fewer new features. This release should be much more stable (i.e. bug-free) than Voxhumana, though, which is the primary reason for the push.

I think before warewaffle gets released, the keyboard editing bit should be customizable, because I don't use any of the newer nightlies anymore because it makes drawing a real chore.

Also, the issue with the new palette is there aren't two different blacks (one for transparency and one for the color).

You don't really need to waste a spot with 2 different blacks anyway though since your transparent one will always be the far left color of the palette. You could use the same black color for both.

Err, no.

If you make a tile and want it to have both transparency and black on it, how do you suggest it will work?

Oh, heh, I just got what you were saying on that one. I thought you meant for palettes.

No, but even then, I'm not sure if having the top left black in a space that isn't the first one in a palette will necessarily make for a black color as opposed to a transparent one.

The first slot of a 16 color palette is transparent. The other 15 slots are opaque, no matter what color they are.

However, for maptiles, transparency is based on master palette slot 0, which is, you are correct, the only pure black.

But I notice now, examining the palette more closely, that there are four colors that are duplicated. &h0F0F0F, &h232323, &hC7FFFF, &hE7FFFF

So I can tweak the palette a little to reclaim three of those four wasted colors, and include an extra non-zero pure black.

umm.. slight problem with the new game.exe.. it doesn't work. It never goes to the game select screen, just a window filled with black.. wonder why?
I used the debian package up to this point, but with wine I can run the .exe to use the nightly.. but its not working. The custom.exe works fine.

EDIT: new problem.. now the old game.exe isn't working, leading me to believe I should never have mixed debian packages and the wip.. I'll try to fix it, and post the solution here..

EDIT 2: possible solution.. I'll download the source and unzip it into the ohrrpgce folder, and see if that works.. um.. source confuses me, too many files, and I've run out of ideas.. Help please?

I like the new palette, but the new arrangement takes some getting used to, and there isn't really a "true" blue, red, green, or yellow.

Hm, the new palette's a bit too saturated in my opinion, but I guess I could get used to it.

Also, the new Mark/Clone tools are really spiffy and they should help quite a bit for my quick maptile tweaks.
Thankies!

Why not just make a selection between many different palettes anyways? Like when creating a new game it asks you to choose one (or just make a download page with many different palettes if there isn't one yet, preferably including some description for what type of game the palette is useful).

Running under wine sounds like a bad idea.

Compiling the source code shouldn't be too difficult. Try following the instructions here, and if you have problems, let me know so I can improve the instructions.

If anybody makes any cool palettes that would be useful for others, I can put them in the import folder.
