What do you think about this grid for enemy placement?

Uhm...

It'll certainly look nice. Does it serve any particular purpose?

I also don't understand the purpose behind your diagram

I believe it is for the formations editor.

In my opnion, pretty much any formation works as long as the enemy isn't covered up by the ATB bars or the heroes.

For your particular image, it might be a little odd that the heroes are lined up in a slant while your foes are lined up in a flat vertical line.

Not really, it makes sense perspective-wise: the vertical line is in the center of the screen.

On a tangent, White Owl made really nice use of perspective in his battle backdrops, and made it more obvious than, say, Fenrir's insanely awesome backdrops.

I see your point with the middle line, but I was referencing this:

I realize that many games use this form of alignment in their battles (and I'm not necessarily encouraging an actual reflective perspective), but I was just pointing out that it seemed a little odd to me.

With access to a more powerful system, I worked in Blender to make this:

That neutral zone is fairly big though. Often half the screen just isn't enough space for a large formation - especially with big bosses.

How many columns should it be scaled back then? By a rough glance at your picture, I'm guessing three...

I don't really agree with the whole "template" thing. Each battle should be laid out according to the monsters you're fighting in it.
However, I do like your perspective diagram. That's pretty cool.

That's just fine if you're trying to recreate a really old RPG, where every enemy was aligned in a 3x3 grid or something similar.
I prefer to individualize each battle though.

Also, just what is supposed to go in the "Neutral Zone"? Allies, boundaries, inanimate objects? Maybe nothing at all.

Hmm... i suppose you can place an enemy that hurts other enemys there.

Or innocent people caught into a battle zone somehow that dont really support eather partys.

I just want to make it known that it's also important to have enemy layouts that make it intuitive to select certain enemies in battles. I remember fighting battle formations with scattered enemies where attempting to select the more out of way ones was troublesome.

Heh, I notice that after I mentioned it, FUABMX got 7 downloads this week.

I have to agree that I don't see the point of designing these templates.

True. Also, the choice of the first enemy (the default selection) is also important.
