Hiya,

I've been trying to convert portrait images to 4 bit so they can be imported. When using index mode in photoshop cs2 everything seems to go smoothly until i decide to save the file as a bitmap, upon which photoshop completely crashes. In the past I had (relative) success except the resulting images would be garbled greyscale messes.

Is there an easier/less painful way to do this? The pictures I want to import aren't terribly complex or anything.

Thanks Happy

If you have Paint Shop Pro, it usually works better than PhotoShop for me. I use PSP 9, but 8 and 7 seem fine too.

You can also use MS Paint--paste in your palette and figure out which colors need to be set. That can take a while, though.

I draw everything in MSpaint, using the default 16 for everything besides backdrops and tilesets, planning on changing the palette after importing.

That, or I just draw it in the engine.

Get graphicsgale. Open your portrait. Make a new file with the same dimensions, but set the bit depth to 4 bit. Copy your drawn one into the new file, then import it. (the colors will look jacked up in graphicsgale, as it will apply its own default palette, just dont worry about it.) import using 'no palette' (or whatever the settings called) and apply your colors in Custom.

(there might be a conversion option. i've never cared enough to hunt for it)

(you can also change the colors from the default palette to whatever you want, if you prefer. the image will change color when you change the corresponding one)

What I do is I make the lineart using Paint.net, then set it up for importing using Microsuck Paint, then import and color inside of Custom.

I've got an older Photoshop, but my preferred method is:

File, save for web, save as 16 color gif.

Reload the .gif, save as, 4 bit bmp.

Import.

in GraphicsGale...

go to All Frames>Color Depth. And there you are. Simple, one-step, and the program is free (not to mention the best spriting program i've ever used)
