This is an absolutely ridiculous question, and I feel rather like an idiot asking, but what exactly are slices? I mean, I've read the wiki page and such, I'm just a little confused as to what exactly it is that they.. y'know, do.

The answer is everything and nothing.
Slices can be very simple, or very complex. They are interesting thingies (which I hear was their original name, "thingies") and have the ability to increase their capabilities in tandem with the user's own knowledge of programming, planning, and plotscripting.
The sheer span of what they can do is simply amazing and cannot be documented by my meager words.

EDIT: But that wouldn't be very useful, so I'll give it a try anyway.
Here's one example of the many things slices can do. If you've ever played an OHR game with a continuous HUD (Heads-Up-Display, like a health bar or custom menu), this was likely done with slices.

Unfortunately, I'm lacking proper screenshots, but this'll do. This was made by some others, Giz and Hawk if I'm not mistaken, and it was not made with the OHRRPGCE. But.
If you look up in the top-left corner, there's a HUD. That can be achieved in an OHR game now thanks to slices.
This is still an inadequate answer, though.

It's not a ridiculous question; slices just aren't documented well enough and everyone is asking that same question.

If you've read the 'Slices' tutorial, you'll know that they are "rectangular things". Basically, they are things drawn on screen. But some of them, containers and other special slices which act like containers are invisible, and are used just for positioning or organising their 'child' slices.

EDIT: I've updated the 'slices' tutorial with a list of the different types of slices, which will give you a better feel for what they are. ALSO I've discovered that literally half the article, starting partway through "Looping through slices" was not being displayed because of a formatting error!! Have another look at the article if you've already read through it.

Thanks to the both of you for the speedy&spiffy replies.

So slices can be used for things like faking Zelda-style attacks in a cutscene, or performing animations which wouldn't be possible using just the walkabout graphics?

Yup.
I would imagine you could do it for in-game graphics too.

When I have time, I'm going to attempt to include battle attack animations as special effects for one of my on-keypress scripts.
