Anyone know how to change the tempo of a midi (midway through a song) using anvil?
Is this possible?
If so, is this supported by the OHR? _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

Almost certainly no. I tried a while back and found no direct way to do it.
There's possibly an event code that can do this, but it would likely be unsupported by the OHR, considering that loop points (which I think you previously asked about), from another event code, are not.
It's not too hard to imitate this just be manually changing note lengths and time signatures. I composed Rolling Drum and Melting Drum with this technique, you can open them in Anvil to see what I did. Be sure you have a recent version (like no more than two years old), older ones can't use certain note lengths. |

((Sadface))
I was hoping to try and write a Klesmer-ish song involving an accelerando over a long stretch of music. Oh well.
I might try the note-length trick - I did it once in Notate.
I remember finding the shift in tempo to be too large, and was a little jarring.
Anyways, It's probably still worth a try.
Do you know if there's a quick and easy way in anvil to change the lengths of rests (like it does with note-lengths)?
The "Change note length" is really handy if you want to make notes more/less staccato ... but if there was something that changed the note spacings, that could be used for artificial tempo changes. _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

I believe Noteworthy lets you change the tempo of a song in the middle, though I've only done this in one of the shareware versions that don't let you save to a midi unless you register. |

I wonder if one of the module formats like MOD/IT/S3M/XM could handle this? |

The OHR DOES support tempo control, I know this as a fact - tracks I wrote for Wandering Hamster make use of these and they playback correctly. _________________ Moogle no longer owes prizes. |

Wows! This is midi you're talking about?
Tempo changes *midway* through a song?
How did you do it? _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

The software I use handles all the technical stuff, but it basically just sends the appropriate midi messages to the interpreter. http://www.midi.org/techspecs/midimessages.php.
I'm unsure how Anvil deals with that, or if it is even possible using Anvil - I haven't used it in many years. It's fine software, but it pales in comparison to professional applications. _________________ Moogle no longer owes prizes. |

As I've stated before, I never use anvil for the actual composition.
In noteworthy it's a simple thing. Right click on the staff right where you want the tempo change. In the popup menu highlight Notation and click Tempo. Simple as that.
When you've entered what tempo you want it to change to, and click OK, you'll see a little notation on the staff where you right clicked, displaying the tempo at that spot and on.
I took a quick look in anvil to see how they do it, but NATURALLY couldn't find something as simple as tempo change. _________________ SACRE BLEU!

Garr ... now I just might have to try out this noteworthy program.

@ James
I think I remember XM being able to do this ... I'll have to check later, but I think you can set up a series of loops, each with their own speed, and each with a predetermined number of loops. _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

Hoha!
It might be of interest to other composers out there that PrintMusic can change MIDI tempos, and that these tempo changes are compatible with the OHR (at least, they are with custum.exe - I didn't try game.exe, but I assume it would work the same).
I suspect anvil can do the same, but that added feature costs $20 or so.
I bought it to test it out ... and ... uh, I haven't tried it yet.
EDIT:
Anvil can do it!
Even better, the Anvil add-on feature lets you graphically specify the tempo by drawing a little tempo VS time graph!
I played around with some other features - you can also do stuff like pitch bending, which lets you do things like trombone slides.
I'm going to have a lot of fun with this. _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

Oh wow, pitch bends? Really? Does the paid version of Anvil have something that makes pitch bends easy or is it just going into MIDI events and programming it in manually? |

Well, you can use the mouse to draw a "pitch bend VS time" graph for the overall MIDI voice, or you can zoom in on each individual note and edit them individually. You can freehand draw the line, or use a "staight line" tool.
You can also edit tempo, volume (and maybe other things?) in the same manner. _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |
