This will probably sound quite foolish...

I'm not exactly an artist, is there a way you can import a sprite for each of the animations?

Yeah, regardless of what graphic you're editing in custom, you can press 'I' and it will take you to a screen to select the image you want to import. Just make sure the image you import is the right size. This link shows the different sizes for each graphic:

EDIT: I said regardless, but I don't think you can import a single maptile; you have to import sets. And speaking of sets, the link should also tell you how to import entire sprite sets by pressing CTRL + F.

You can indirectly import individual tiles by importing a 320x200 image as either a backdrop or a tileset, and then using the menu options to "cut" tiles out of it onto your tileset. This is also how you copy tiles between tilesets.

i always copied tiles between tilesets by just copying and pasting them. the way you are suggesting seems a lot harder.

All of that being said....

Creating your own tilesets gives you a greater level of personality to the game. After all, FF6, didn't steal tiles from somewhere else.

It's also a great learning curve when figuring out all of the ins and outs of the maps. Rather than just scripting which when done day in day out can get tiresome. Raspberry!

Yeah, it seems that way the first time you try it, but cutting tiles from other tilesets is actually much faster than trying to copy/paste each individual one between the sets (I used to do this; it gets old really quick).

If you have trouble lining them up, you can hold SHIFT while pressing the arrow keys to move by tile instead of by pixel.
