This isn't another thread about "How do I draw good?"

How do you make your graphics? Do you do them in the editor or do you use some sort of program? I've been drawing in the editor for a while, and I guess thats why my graphics suck so much...

I draw everything in the OHR editor. I think it's great! Big grin

EDIT: Erm... for pixel art, of course. Not 'computer' art... that's what I call art made on the computer that isn't pixelated.

I use the OHR editor for all the stuff like maptiles, walkabouts, battle gfx.. (everything except backdrops). I guess the good thing about this is that I can't draw anything with a mouse, and the OHR keyboard lets you draw with the keyboard.

I use custom to do everything beside battle background and cutscene. Sometime I use Paint Shop Pro for cut and paste, though.

Sprites are done almost %100 in the editor. I take them out only when I want to do something like flip them upside down. Maptiles are done in the editor, but sometimes I take them into Paint Shop to shade quicker. I also use PS if I want a different angle for a scene, I make 'walls' out of the tiles and then put the desired perspectives and such on them and piece it all together. Maps always start with editor made maptiles though, everything else is just unneccessarry (Will someone tell me how to spell that?) special effects. I usually do backdrops in a similar fashion to the EOTE2 style, except that I put a perspective on the floor tiles and I usually make the skyline from scratch. Bastard.GUNs will have hand drawn backgrounds though. The Evil Dead style is ridiculous yet awesome. There was an article on it at RPG Online, but you try finding that. There you make a basic outline in a paint program, then import it and do the whole background one maptile at a time. The porn in IMD:X-Mas was ripped though, I hope I don't get points knocked off in the Septa review over that. Also ripped was the title screen for IMD:DC and the poster for Crocodile Dundee 4 (Although I added the four). I hope that clears up any confusion as to whether or not I photographed the naked chick myself, or designed the original Crocodile Dundee or The Harder They Come movie posters.

I pretty much the editor for everything except for the battle backgrounds. I also use 3rd party pixelling program to do some of the large, multi-tile bosses.

ps: Don't worry rollingstone, everybody knows you wouldn't be lucky enough to photograph Jessical Biel naked Ha ha ha!

I use the editor for all my walkabout sprites, hero graphics, maptiles, and most enemy graphics. If I need to apply special effects to them (such as spinning them from an overhead view) I'll take them to Photoshop or PSP. Backgrounds are done by screenshotting an appropriate section of the map, then cropping it down a little bit (to clean it up) and resizing it. Obviously, I do that outside the editor. Attack graphics are done almost solely in Photoshop or PSP7. Another nifty trick I use is screenshotting, cutting, pasting, and the 'cut tiles' feature of the OHR when making animated tiles - it is much easier when you cut and paste then import the new tiles because you don't have to constantly redraw things and make sure everything's lined up.

I use the editor for everything except some tilesets and backdrops, which I do in "THE GIMP."

I draw everything in the editor that is possible to draw in the editor. I can't draw with a mouse, and I have failed to find a good, free paint program.

PSP3 and Gimp are good - PSP3 has a "trial" on it but it never actually expires (I should know - mine's at like Day 446 of 30).

I use the editor for map tiles only.

The rest I use with PSP 6.02 (I prefer this over PSP7), allthough it is alot easier to make hero sprites with the editor, but even the editor has its limits.

I've been saying this for almost twenty years but,

If I could draw backdrops in-editor, I would do so. It's always been either my top choice or second choice for pixel art in general and it's a bit frustrating to need to rely on external applications for my battle screens and title screen when I can draw maptiles, monsters, and basically everything else.

Sure, I could, nowadays, set some sort of sprite to have a frame size of 320x200 or whatever my game's resolution is going to be (and the display breaks in some way no matter what you set it to if it's higher or lower), export it, then re-import it as a backdrop.

Maybe using a tablet and more advanced art program will help with the title screen and backdrops; Vore Day RPG's title screen is drawn with a tablet.
