|
|
I don't want to start a Win vs. Mac war here, but does anybody here use OHR through a DOS emulator on a different OS? I'm intent on purchasing a new comp(ahem Laptop), but I wish to continue working on OHR on it. If I chose a Mac, well I don't know if I can use OHR on it(Hence the question). If I choose a PC, I get to use OHR but slightly hinder my computing needs in real life (sorry I'm a Mac fan). Anyway, if anybody has any answers to that I'd be glad to hear it, but remember my first sentence people. _________________ If you hit a plane with the soccer, could you afford to fix it? - Shaolin Soccer

On the FAQ on the Hamster Republic Homepage, James says that several Linux and Mac emulators have been confirmed to work, just some buggy speed defects have occured _________________ Signature |

The Macintosh thing is called 'Virtual PC.' I have no information on it, though. _________________ Preserve OHR history! Do it for the children! |

There's also a Windows version of Virtual PC. I have successfully gotten Game.exe to run in it (with sound!), but I haven't been able to run Custom.exe in it. :\ _________________

I've used the PC version of 'Virtual PC'. It works, but it runs extremely slow in most places. There's also a weird problem with text boxes where you can't see them when your editing them until you have 2-3 lines typed in. I haven't used it extensively so there's probably more problems. In theory, it might run usabley if you have a faster computer (and more memory would probably help too), but there's no way to be sure (unless there's someone around here with such a thing). Not to mention it's very expensive.
Anyway, I'd reccomend just getting a real PC if you want any hope of running the OHR properly... but then, I'm biased towards PCs sooo...
Edit: Argh, Aeth beat me to it >.< To run custom.exe run game.exe first then custom.exe |

Heck, I'd just get a G5 or something and buy a little Win95 computer for the OHR. _________________ You got film in my video game!

The OHR will run on an old 25-cent 486, but it doesn't run at optimal performance. It DOES work, though, so you can grab one of those if you have a copy of Win95 or 3.1 (ahh, 3.1, how I miss thee...) _________________

Ahh, 3.1. Actually, we had a special networking version; it was Windows 3.11, but our computer was so bad it didn't have the memory to run that! This was the computer we had before getting the one we have now. I loved it. Everything was done from DOS, it was great. We used Wordperfect 5.1 for DOS as well, so much better than the visual-based wordprocessors now... |

You might want to try bochs http://bochs.sourceforge.net/
A couple years ago I tried bochs on my old Linux computer (a K6-2/350) at work. It worked without any glitches that I could see, but was too slow. On a modern machine it might be fast enough. I am going to try it on my Penium III 800 and see how it works there.
There is also a MacOSX version of bochs, so I would be curious to know if that works for anybody. |

Has anybody tried http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ ?
I just stumbled upon it yesterday, and was please to see that it runs GAME.EXE on Linux even better than DOSEMU. I was able to get sound support to work too. Unfortunately it is still slower than a Windows dos box, but it is still quite cool-- and on my Dual Athalon 2000 at work it runs better than full-speed :)
One thing I noticed was that most other DOS games run full speed in dosbox. I think the reason GAME.EXE runs so slowly in DOS emulators is because of the direct hardware access. In a ture DOS environment, direct VGA access is the fastest and most efficient possible method of display, but in an emulated environment direct access turns out to be slower.
Anyway, I would be curious to hear how dosbox works in Windows, as I haven't gotten a chance to test it there yet.
Now I am all happy because I can play my old DOS games like "Gobliins 2" and "God of Thunder" on my Linux box :) |
