Considering that he's only submitted one game it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. _________________ Locked

Well... I don't think you can categorize this as a review, but you might find this criticism to be helpful in the future.
The words that pop up in my head when I’m thinking about the map design are linear and stale. The map is VERY linear. It is literally designed to have the players walk from path A to path B, From another map to the other. There are some branching paths along the way, but they are very short and for the most time lead to power-up items. The puzzles are simplistic but nice; it is just a pity that there are too few of them. Overall, the linearity and predictable map designs somewhat detract the gaming experience.
The graphic is neither stellar nor awful. Just about average. I can see some effort being put into the map tiles, especially the castle tile, but ultimately they are still lacking. Tiles could use some variety; Camdog should stop abusing his artistic license by using the same tile over & over (ie: the castle walls.) I notice that there are varieties on the bricks, but they are hardly noticeable (spicing up the texturing would help.)
Ok, let’s talk about the battle balance now. Make them shorter please… it takes forever to beat the red orcs even with the proper spells & equipments. I swear it takes around five minutes to get pass one battle. Not good. I’m going to be blunt with you here… the sense of strategy is very shallow. Maybe I played the game with the wrong strategy or something, but my typical tactic always follows the same pattern: barkskin, empower, flash/explode. Every now and then, I use a slightly different strategy, but I think they are more or less the same. At times, the battles also suffer from the typical “fight & heal” syndrome. In addition, some battles require that you have specific items equipped or you’ll be beaten to pulp. This sounds okay at first; sort of like how they handle the boss fights in Rockman… you have to experiment with different weapons to get maximum result. However, the problem with this approach in this game is that you can’t change equipments during battles. And most critical, you don’t know which equipments are good against which enemies… unless you get into the battles and often times ended dying in a pool of blood.
But on the other hand, although I haven’t finished the game yet, I must say that the story is pretty interesting so far. It reveals the clouded event bits by bits. I like this approach of storytelling. I like the music too; they sounded warcraft-ish… (at least the first WC game anyway), somewhat fresh for an OHR game.
Ps: I apologize if I made Bliss sound like a bad game, it isn’t. It has an interesting premise, but the execution could be better.

Oh, YOU made Bliss. Gotcah. Few issues:
1. Battles are too long. First, the speed bar is amazingly slow. Second, bosses have way too many HP. Third, they do too much damage in the long run, and that lame 1st level healing spell (recover I think...) only heals 100 or so HP, so you have to do the other 40mp healing spell, and so you run out of MP.
2. Need a save point sooner. I got to the three red...guys. I had drunk every potion and used every magic-points bottle, and I still lost.
Basically, I spent probably 15 minutes to a half hour playing four or five battles, which was NOT enjoyable. However, the story seemed somewhat enjoyable, though I couldn't figure out why the dungeon had only one jail (the one you were in...)
Fix it up, and I'll play it again. _________________ But enough talk, have at you! |

Thanks for taking time to check out my game and give me some comments. I took your advice and uploaded a new version of bliss (there's a post in announcements w/ more info). Just a few questions and comments...
Quote: | 1. Battles are too long. First, the speed bar is amazingly slow. Second, bosses have way too many HP. About the heal spell... It's considerably more powerful if you've beefed up your magic stat (which is possible later in the game and with equipment). It can be made so much more powerful that the 40 mp spell becomes obsolete, depending on how you choose to beef up your character.
Quote: | 2. Need a save point sooner. I got to the three red...guys. I had drunk every potion and used every magic-points bottle, and I still lost. |
I think the current way of handling saving will help things. Out of curiosity, how were you fighting the battles? In playtesting, I never had a problem running out of magic this early.
Quote: | Maybe I played the game with the wrong strategy or something, but my typical tactic always follows the same pattern: barkskin, empower, flash/explode |
Just to let you know, empower is the spell that raises attack power. Infuse raises magic power. The strategy you outlined would be just as effective if you skipped the empower part, as it has no effect on spellcasting (this may have increased the length of the battles for you as well).
Quote: | I’m going to be blunt with you here… the sense of strategy is very shallow. |
How far into the game did you get? Battles in the beggining are a touch simplistic by virtue of neccessity; I don't want to give every item to the player at the beginning. Also, at one point the player reaches a store where he can buy stat-boosting potions, which I think adds to the strategy a lot.
Anyway, like I said, thanks for playing and commenting. I'd love it if you guys would try the new version and let me know what you think. |

whoops, I must've confused the two spells together . Apologies. Regardless of that, I still think the battles are long even with infuse (in the old version anyway.) I'll be sure to give the new version a try this weekend. And oh, I got killed by the ghosts just right outside the castle/fortress.
