Them's Fightin'

Well kids, here we are at CP, The Land of video game opportunity. A place we can release and talk about our interactive works of art. But sometimes decent games can go through the cracks with no reviews while worse games DO get reviews just because they suck. But here we are 2007 and when I was cycling through the gamelist to get to Sword of Jade, a moving title screen caught my eye. It seemed to have decent graphics and be of decent quality so I downloaded. Enter Super Riz

Graphics |

This game doesn't rock the tradition "good" spriting you usually see. All the Sprites are round and circular, not to complicated. But the thing is, they are done quite well. There's cartoony shading style here. The start movie has a well made backdrop. It all fits the comedic style of the game. So while these didn't bring tears to my eyes, they didn't burn either.

Storyline |
Riz is drunk again. As he goes outside to greet the day he is met with a dark specter. Not, it isn't the grim reaper, its an otherworldly super being here to tell Riz that music these days sucks. And its up to Riz to take it to the MAN (yes the man) and tear him a new one. The dark one gives him a new sword with which to tear new ones and the adventure begins. Riz meets his friend Castro (Black? Cuban? I dunno?) and they set off for the south to...find music...

Gameplay |

Not a huge part of the game. It's like the average OHR game and doesn't have too much new stuff. But it handles the old stuff well enough.

Battle |
The enemies are pretty varied. It's not a game where you beat the enemies in one hit. And it's not a game where you hold down the spacebar for an hour either. The heroes attacks are pretty weak. Even the special attacks kinda suck. But the battles are balanced enough along with item distribution. The bosses were a pretty huge curve from the normal enemies and the one hit kill was a bit absurd considering you only get ONE revive item.

Map Design |
...The Original town map was your basic OHR town. There are 4 portals to different part of the world. Basic RPG set up. The first south dungeon however was pretty excellent by OHR standards. There was an interesting puzzle in the first half and in the second half you have to use lily pads as transportation around lakes. Technically not hard to do but was fresh enough to keep me interested.

Balance |

Pretty Balanced. The battles weren't too easy but they were still beatable. But be ready for the boss to thwamp anyone not ready for a fight.

Music |
I'm pretty sure most of it was ripped. Music from various sources like Snoop Dog etc. But it all works considering that's the cornerstone of the game.

Enjoyment |
Here's what really counts. The Game, although not doing anything really new and not having a seriously dynamite story, was interesting enough to keep me going. The parodies of Snoop Dog with Snoop Frog and townspeople actually acting out the lyrics of songs was funny to me and gave me motivation to see what's around the next corner. Really this is an enjoyable game.

Final Blows |

It's a game worthy of a download and time. Don't come expecting really laugh out loud jokes or anything very outstanding. But expect a well built game with decent graphics an enjoyable story.
