Alright everyone, I've been hanging around for a couple of days now, lurking here and there, downloading and playing a few games, but now I've decided to begin work on my very own project!

I'll be updating this journal every week or so.

Currently I have no title Oookay...

Storyline

Right now, the story revolves around an eccentric main character. He/She begins lazing about in the forest when a gaurd approches him and summons him to the mayor's house for important news. After a quick tutorial through the forest, the player arrives in the village. It's basically a generic town with shops, INN, saves, etc. Once the player reports to the mayor, they recieve the quest of investigating a strange noise coming from one of the houses.

Once the player arrives in the house, they will discover a switch revealing a secret passage. The passage takes them to a laboratory themed dungeon. The final boss will be composed of a robotic android, who upon defeat will reveal a passage behind him. The passage will reveal the major turning point in the storyline.

That will be it for the v1.0 Demo.

Production Status

Currently I have nothing but a few walkabouts and a couple of maps completed. I will be working on the village tilesets and layout for the next couple of days.

Outside Village

Starting Area

Walkabout (Top is hero, bottom is random enemy)

Any criticism is appreciated, both on graphic design and plot!

Title Ideas Please!

You seem humble enough. I like that quite a bit.

I'm not an expert on plot, and I've stated numerous times that I suck at storytelling, so I can't really give critique on your plot.

Your graphics aren't that bad, though they suffer from being .jpgs. I think the trees should stand out more somehow. They're the same color as your grass and don't have much shading to add volume (especially compared to the trunk).

Other than pillowshading and gradient abuse being really bad things to do, I can't really comment much on your characters since they're both exceptionally simple.

The story sounds pretty hackneyed. It is your first game, so it's expected that you will rely a lot more on influences than in the future, but at the very least try and make your main character unique in some way. Who is he? What are his goals, his problems? What's he doing in this forest? As of right now, it's all very vague. For instance, you claim the hero is eccentric. How so? What does he do that makes him seem this way? Be specific--specific things are more interesting. This is not to say you can't start the game where you do, but I don't feel engaged by your description. You even say yourself that the town is "a generic town." Well, I hope you aren't aiming to impress.

Of course, if you're just getting your feet wet with the engine, that's really OK. Everyone stumbles with their first project, and hopefully you can get some good feedback. In many ways it's better not to be too ambitious with your first game, but don't be afraid to step it up a notch.

Why are the characters slimes? Is this explained? Is there a purpose behind making them slimes? If not, there needs to be or your game is just going to look really lazy.

I hope I don't sound too negative, btw. It's great to see a new user making a game with original art, writing his own story, etc. I think you are off to a good start, but I really want to enjoy this game when I play it, so I hope you will choose to enrich it in some way. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, but something creative and interesting would be nice.

That seems to be a common problem around here.
