Saturday Evening, a friend of mine and Thellos's come to our home, and the situation behind it warranted the visit. He'll likely be staying with us for the foreseeable future as well. You see, he's lost his home, all his personal possessions, his important documents (birth certificate, etc), and can no longer attend the University he was scheduled to enter. He also will be unable to even return to his home, possibly for months. Maybe a whole year.
Because it's all 25 feet under water.
I'd usually say something like "just let that sink in", but considering his recent hardships (and those of nearly 500,000 people) I'd say that would be in incredibly bad taste. Anyhow, We've gotten much closer to our friend, so that's at least one bright spot to add. Not much though, compared to the unbelievably incredible human suffering now playing out in the southern portions of my state, and the absolutely heartbreaking feelings of despair and utter hopelessness now felt by tens of thousands of my fellow Louisianians - my heart and my home go out to them.
For those seeking to help (and there probably are amoung some of our community members), I would ask you not to send money to me - but rather to organizations such as the American Red Cross, Goodwill Industries, and other organizations devoted to the improvement of the human condition. |
