I've decided to rerelease this game. The main difference in the new version will be getting rid of the 'fangame' nature of the original. Thus nearly every single place name has been changed (they were orignally made to resemble places in various Dragon Warrior games). More importantly perhaps, I've finally given in and deleted the word 'moogle' from the game. My own race of tekkui replace them; I didn't change anything about them from a strict gameplay standpoint however, because I was pretty happy with most of the battle balance as the original game went on.
Most importantly, I have reworked (again) Part 1 to try to make it less like Chapter 1 from DWIV (it started out as practically a carbon copy both in homage to that game and as a tool to get used to working with the engine). I think I'm pretty happy with the result, but I still need to playtest it further.
Other minor changes are mostlly textual and graphical (I finally got around to making actual bed maptiles to get rid of those 'cot' placeholders). Most of it is done, but I still want to playtest the thing as a whole (and its a large game) to see if I feel any other things need tweaked. This is just an announcement of intended rerelease, really. Should be ready to go for "Release your game month". Although if anyone out there is interested in being an outside playtester, I would be delighted (just reply to this, and I'll email you a copy). Know, however, that this is a very traditional RPG, and despite a few twists, it was designed to play like pretty much every Dragon Warrior ever released. Not sure how much it succeeded in that regard. _________________ My first completed OHR game, Tales of the New World:

Well, we all have to deal with failure sometimes. I was pretty well on-schedule playtesting-wise, but I ran into a pretty nasty bug in the very final area of the game on the 30th, and I haven't been able to fix it yet. So I failed at Release-Your-Game-Month. I will still release a new version, hopefully very soon. Most of my playtesting has gone well and I am especially happy with the difficulty balance as the game goes on. EXCEPT bug 257 (mute broken for enemies) is really very annoying.
PS: Is the hamster mail archive thing ever going to be put back up? I'm talking about:

You're right, that link no longer works. Check 'Template:Devmailinglist' for working links. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Well, I finally figured out the problem (there were actually a couple things wrong, but the big one was an off-by-one error in the middle of a rediculously ugly script that was wiping a certain global variable that was important only if you died and your last save was in a specific place). So I re-updated. Probably for the last time, unless I get around to redoing some music. Most of the new stuff is outlined in the first post in this topic, but I've rebalanced a couple of small issues (most effect magic is now cheaper, for one thing).
I'd actually like to say here that I am really very pleased with the final product. It's not a masterpiece, but I had fun for the vast majority of the 30 playtesting hours needed to beat the game. I'm most proud of the difficulty balance as the game goes on; random battles get harder at just about the right pace for my style of gameplay. I'm also fairly happy with character balance; I enjoyed balancing my three parties in the final area more than I did in FFIII. But of course, its all personal taste, and of course my game would suit my own personal taste. As always, any thoughts are welcome. _________________ My first completed OHR game, Tales of the New World:
