Well, I think graphics and story are unimportant, and have yet to grow tired of the engine's default music.
So, prettymuch, if you judge it on most critics' idea of what makes an RPG worthwhile, it comes up as "crap from every standpoint."
This, coupled with the fact that I love cliche, makes for an awkward experience overall.
My focus has always been on gameplay; ultimately, I want the game to be ballanced, and I want it to be fun. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

It's important that your graphics do not cause harm to the viewer. Just because you don't think graphics are important is no excuse to make yours terrible. _________________

The thing is, these are the kind of graphics I think look good. Shading and dull colors hurt my eyes. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

But you don't think graphics are important, so you might as well go with everyone else's opinion.
Outlines would automatically make your graphics a lot less painful. No shading or "dull colors" required. _________________

I agree. Outlines would make things look better, simply because it would help eliminate the clash with the background.
Don't outline FF style though, just outline around the very edges of the sprite to separate it from the background, and outline in places where you need to separate similar colors (such as the arm and tail). _________________

Thanks for the input. The original version of Wolf's Quest was my first time experimenting with outlines; I wound up putting too many in, and that made the sprites look bad.
I guess I could give it a go now, having the rest of the character image already defined. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

Guh, isn't there a middle ground between dull colors and eye-blisteringly neon? |

Not that I know of, no. As it is, I've been trying very hard to make the sort of game that people other than myself can enjoy.
I've added outlines to some, but not yet all, of the sprites. I just didn't have the time.
Wolf equipped with a copper axe. To celebrate, I shall change my avatar shortly.
This is a screenshot taken in CUSTOM. As you can see, Wolf and Akira are very different entities, despite Akira's sprite being a clone of Wolf's. And I need Dead sprites. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

Hmm... actually, I can see a lot of potential in this, personally. I for one have always enjoyed colorful things, but if I didn't know better I could swear you were only using the default pallet. Let yourself come out of the shell and experiment a little, man.
I must say the battle screens look far better now than they did, but I still have a handfull of concerns...
1) If two of the characters' healing spells are designed to be worthless (and lets not deny it, from what you described they are) why bother implimenting them at all? You're just giving the player a knee-jerk way of screwing himself, then.
2) I'm going to go ahead and assume the boxes are for testing purposes.
3) I'm going to come right out and say it. The feline is downright fugly. I'm sorry, but to me it looks like a colorless blob. MAybe if she wern't bright green...
Now, I haven't been around for a good long while, so if any of these concerns are outdated, disreguard them.
On a side note, a word of advice; we all make these games for ourselves, but if you put it out for the world to see, and expect people to respect it for that fact alone, you're acting foolishly. Like it or not, we all have an audience to appease. I learned that one the hard way.
EDIT: Okay, after actually downloading and playing this game, I have further concerns... here's a step by step:
1) Started, noted a handful of spelling errors in the story, nothing a re-reading on your part wont fix.
2) Fought some stuff, and missinterpreted the thing in the corner for an NPC, fought the boss.
3) Got my ass kicked.
4) Tried again, ground to lvl 88 and decided to try again.
5) I see what you're doing with his sword. stop it.
6) After a long, redundant, and kinda boring fight, I beat the sucker. HealAll kinda made it lopsided.
7) Made it to the first town, accidentaly went right instead of foreward, and walked through a door into an endless blue mass with no means of returning.
8) shot my dog out of frustration.
I like the way you're going with this stuff, just not sure I like how you're getting there. Oh, and I was kidding, I don't even have a dog. _________________ C:\DOS

I've updated again. Now there's an overworld(actually, just Africa).
Here's some screenshots.
This new Sandsea is almost as good as the old one.
The real reason that Wolf is the only hero in that part of the world.
Zera's personality is much more fleshed out in this version. As are her breasts.
Testing Zera out in battle.
Now, I think I'll do more of experimenting with colors other than the default palette.
Thanks for all the advice, Stewie. I think I might change the Rose Fire's graphic again.
And I'll have to look through the game's dialogue and intro to see if I can find any spelling errors(other than the intentional ones). I found one, but forgot to change it before zipping the file.
Now, I've always tried to make games to please myself. I've never expected other people to like them, or at least not as much as I do.
And, yes, it's a story thing to start at 87 and learn a ton of new spells by grinding to 88. In the earlier version of this game(which is abysmal, but complete), Akira began at 76 and had to level up to 77.
And as a bit of trivia, Akira is actually named after the Akita dog breed. It's just that it wasn't being pronounced right when I heard it, so I wound up misspelling it. It's been his name too long for me to change it now. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

Well, I fixed a few mistakes I made in the last update(such as one or two spelling errors, and a couple of missing commas). The only important one was the fact that I forgot to set my "NPC Wall" to "step on" mode in Peridot Castle.
I've changed the naughty image of Akira's sword. I was really only doing to see if anyone would notice. I think.
Before:
After:
Now the name "Rose Fire" makes more sense.
Oh, and by the way, I won't be drawing any new furry art for the next forty days. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;
