Every god damn day feels like slavery to me. Every so often my sensibilities awaken and I get a strong urge to just... not show up at my job tomorrow.
But I always manage to sedate the rational part of me, pulling away from the fire, rejoining the fuckin herd.

I'm a barback, slowly training to be a bartender. But it's a dying casino I work at. I look after three bars, and my boss tends to send me on wild tasks that just barely have to do with my actual responsibilities, naturally hurting my tips and making my relief's job difficult when he comes in. Also, some of the bartenders are the most whiny people I've ever met haha. I'm seriously done arguing about not bringing the sports bar its hot dogs 40 minutes earlier than I'm supposed to, and whether or not they're cooked. So many people in this place barely speak english too, so that compounds every frustration.
It's a really good job though, don't get me wrong, it's not the actual job I was complaining about. To get it I had to be a dishwasher, a busser, a cashier, a host, a trained server, and a valet, spanning every kind of shift you can think of. It's just the fact that I have to be there every day, sacrificing precious hours, just so I can come home and when I'm finally wound down, have to sleep for work the next day, which I delay, so I never get more than 6 hours of sleep. Every so often it all makes me feel downright caged, and my opposition to it becomes violent.
The shift I really want is swing. It's simpler, and busier. No wild tasks. No stocking the supply rooms. Just... ice, beer, fruits. And better tips. But I do that and I will have cut off almost all practice time for the band. So that adds to the conflict. I'm always wary of sacrificing my efforts to make a better future just for the sake of my present, it always looks like an eventual trap to me.
Anyhow, I'm rambling.
edit: forgot to mention that my boss wants me to eventually work 7 days a week during the winter.

Okay, I was exaggerating-- but In the US, you definitely have to get overtime for a 7-day workweek for it to be legal. How much overtime you would get depends on the schedule and the state you work in.
Also, I researched a little more, and I now realize that the state I live in (California) puts more limitations on the hours that an employer can make an employee work. I hadn't realized that workers in other states don't have it quite so good. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a 7 day week is fine, but the total hours can't be over 40 unless they pay you overtime--of course, the rules are probably adjusted for people who are on fixed salary. This is entirely guesswork, I don't know for certain.

My High School World History teacher told my class that the ancient Incas worked a schedule of something like 40 days of non-stop work with no breaks, followed by 20 days of relaxation, which included nonstop partying.
So the moral is, if you work hard, you have to play hard.
Except I can't find any mention of that works schedule on any Wikipedia article related to Incas, so that definitively proves that he made the whole story up... |

Yeah, California seems pretty awesome when it comes to things like that. Where I live (NC), the laws tend to be a touch more regressive.
In fact, I believe that, while workers paid by the hour are required to be paid overtime when they do more than 40 hours in a week, salaried workers receive no such benefit here. At least, that was the case for a friend of mine, though I guess it's possible that what the company was doing wasn't legal. |

Most states don't pay overtime for salaried workers. Many workplaces don't even log hours for salaried workers.

During my previous college semester, the place I used to work at had managers of shit. My store manager would schedule me to work till midnight, and I had to be up by 5 AM the next morning for class. This went on for fifteen weeks. Most nights I didn't get any sleep. And he knew about it too.
