Okay. Marooned is the game that never ends. I’ve been at it for nearly two years. I admit it: I tend to lollygag. I think updating this journal regularly will keep me focused on getting done what needs to get done. I also think aliens have built a base on the moon and are actively quarantining our planet. So…

I have posted screenshots of this game elsewhere in this journal, so I am not going to post any more here. Deal with it. If you want pretty pictures, go to a museum.

What Is Done:

All of the map graphics. (That’s over 115 different maps.)

All of the tag switches for the dungeon puzzles (NO npc “push puzzles” – those suck)

MOST of the music. All original.

MOST battle backdrops (a few unique ones still need doing)

All hero attacks/spells have been programmed

All boss graphics done

MOST items have been programmed

What Needs Doing

Finnish enemy graphics

Finnish attack graphics

Program enemy special attacks

SFX

Place chests and items in dungeons

Finish text boxes

Holy crap this sucks. So much more to do… I keep coming up with new side-quests and secrets, too. Fortunately, when I have good idea, I immediately program it into the game. So all of that stuff is taken care of. Let me break down the characters a bit.

Captain Can O’Corn

The Captain is your typical warrior class character. He focuses on delivering physical attacks and acts as a tank. He learns new techniques from the sacred animals scattered across the island. These techniques play an instrumental role in defeating the bosses of the given dungeons. He has a few hidden (and half-hidden) techniques that he has the option of learning but are not necessary to completing the game.

Shaman

Shaman is your typical healer. He learns spells by leveling up. His offense is not as strong as The Captain’s, but with the right equipment he can become a physical force to be reckoned with. Oh yeah- all of these character classes can be tweaked to fit the player’s playing style through equipment.

B’Gok

B’Gok is the black mage of the group. He learns basic elemental magic through leveling. Each basic spell has three levels of power. He can also learn advanced Dark Voodoo by finding tomes scattered across the island. Attacks learned from tomes are generally more powerful and inflict status ailments or other strange effects. Tomes are generally well-hidden in out-of-the-way places. This will (hopefully) encourage the player to explore thoroughly.

I’ve been spending VAST amounts of time play testing and tweaking the battles so that the game is well balanced. A lot of thought has been put into this game and I am really excited to release it. Honestly, I could release a demo right now that would cover up to the first three dungeons. But I don’t want to. Complete games are few and far between and I want to deliver this beast whole.

Also, there are TONS of secrets and side-quests in this game. I’ve been putting a lot of thought into when and how to reveal them to the player so as not to break the challenge of the game. Lord knows, the LAST thing a player should have when fighting the first boss is THE MOST POWERFUL SPELL IN THE GAME. When I am done, I think I will submit an article to Hamsterspeak describing the process of making my newbie game. I think I planned this son of a bitch out really well and would like to give my insights into the organization and planning it took to get this thing off the ground.

I’ll keep posting as I keep plowing.

I like the Triceraxplode, personally. Or the Terror Guppy.
