Grief

Woo. A 48 Hour game. After talking to Matt over a bizarre error, I was finally able to to finish the game. And I'll be honest. I used the level up cheat to beat it. The enemies give far to little experience, and I had no intention of spending several hours leveling up in each dungeon. When played like this the game actually becames enjoyable. But if you don't cheat, trust me, you'll be very disappointed at the ending.

Storyline: Jared Bennings wakes up in a strange place. A town of gray stone, with it's residents hiding from "freaks". People who look like enemies from real life. Jared's last memories are of his wife dying in a hospital bed, and he's determined to find out what's going on... Following other games in the 48 contest with a nihilist feeling, I won't give away the plot of Grief, since it is interesting. But don't play through without using the level up code, or else this game will become torturous.

Graphics: Almost everything is 3d, giving the game a very different feel. Not to great looking, since the graphics don't really translate well into the engine. Jared walks in a messed up, sweeping motion, like a puppet with it's strings cut. Very strange. To be honest, I didn’t really like the graphics, and I don’t recommend this style for any other games. The 1.6 MB file size doesn’t help either...

Gameplay: The only gameplay this thing has is the endless battles. Very boring and frustrating, since level up takes forever later on. Map designs are unique but small, and not at all interesting to look at.

Music: Played well, it added to the atmosphere of the game immensely. Great choices.

Scores:
Graphics: Take them or leave them. I left them.
4.5/10
Music: Not bad at all.
8.0/10
Storyline: Interesting, though ultimately depressing.
7.0/10
Gameplay: Argh. What were you thinking Matt?
2.0/10
Overall (Not an average score): Played with the level up cheat, it's tolerable. Without? Painful.
3.0/10
