Supernerds V.S. The Goth Kult |
 |
I have been avoiding reviewing games thus far, because I don't want to say something disparaging about other's hard work, however, it appears to me that in "Super Nerds V.S. The Goth Kult" there was not a lot of "hard work", and therefore, I felt compelled to say my piece. This is a game to which I would like to give a positive review, but I feel I simply cannot.
Where should I begin? The title alone suggests that this game is targeted at a highly specialized audience (namely, those who enjoy humor related to "nerds", or "goths"), and this is readily apparent with in the game's dialogue. A lot of things which seem like they were supposed to be jokes went right over my head, although I suspect they would have had the game's authors rolling on the floor.
From what I could gather, the plot of the game is as follows: One day, you decide to go to the mall in order to annoy people for no apparent reason. Your friends are waiting for you in your living room, so you gather them up, and head out. You remind them that before you can go to the mall, you have to pick up your (brother? sister? girlfriend?) "Kari", so you head towards Kari's house. However, one you arrive, the place is infested with goths, and they've taken Kari hostage! That's about the extent of it in this short, 10 minute demo.
The graphics in this game were quite enigmatic. On one hand, the maptiles were fairly dull, and uninspired, although recognizable. The backgrounds were somewhat less desirable, they looked as if they had been made in Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, but once they were imported, they became ugly blotches. However, the hero sprites are quite inspired, and they were actually what I would call "good".
The music was your standard ripped fare, a collection of the OHR's public domain BAMs, and music ripped from Final Fantasy 7, among other commercial games. I suppose it was mildly fitting, although using FF7's, the Turks' theme for the goths really didn't do it for me.
As always, the devil is in the details. Things that really annoy me about OHR games is a clear lack of devotion to quality assurance. Certain rooms have not been wall mapped, allowing you to walk off into space. When you run into a mouse NPC, you go to a battle where you fight cockroaches. You can "download" items from your PC as many times as you want, and then sell them, effectively giving you an infinite source of money. It seems blatantly obvious that this game wasn't really bug checked before being sent for review, and frankly, that really annoys me.
I'll be the first to admit, I'm a polarized reviewer. If I really enjoy a game, I can never say enough good things about it. If I hate a game, I'll curse it to no end. Super Nerds V.S. The Goth Kult seems to be a modest attempt at making a game, but in the end, there are simply too many flaws for me to recommend it.
Scores:
Graphics:
Most non-sprite graphics are fairly bland, but the nice hero graphics save this from being a bust. |
5.0/10 |
Music:
Like most OHR games, the music is ripped. The music in this game fits the atmosphere, but ripping from well known games such as Final Fantasy 7 is a big no-no. |
4.0/10 |
Storyline:
What can I say? The storyline of "Nerds against Goths" is only enjoyable to a very select group. With development, it could be pleasing to a wider range, but as it stands... |
3.0/10 |
Gameplay:
Since this demo is rather short, gameplay is hard to rank. The battles are incredibly easy, but that's excusable. What's not excusable is the lack of attention to detail, making this game quite dismal. |

Overall (Not an average score):
If you're going to submit a game to be reviewed, check it over first! You only get one chance to make a first impression, and, in my book, this moderately buggy game has made a poor one. |
