deluxepaint 2e (DOS) is downloadable here:

http://www.abandondata.nl/appz.php?page=2

it's incredibly capable with paletted images (256colors or less)
the only downside is it doesn't support bmp, so you'd need to convert them to bmp before importing into ohr.

of particular note is the 'shade' mode, which makes shading paletted images hugely faster, and the auto antialiasing option. and the translucent drawing option.

note: rightclicking on a tool icon brings up options - this is necessary to access some of the advanced features.

as the link implies, it's abandonware (no longer being sold).
ironic!

Actually, I don't know what an .ace file is, but I do know another good paint program that runs in DOS called NeoPaint.

Anyone heard of The Gimp? It's especially great for optimizing the palettes with your graphics so you can import them into the OHR. hhtp://www.thegimp.org

I've heard of the GIMP, but I honestly didn't know how to work it.

GIMP is great with the OHR. I use it for some graphics in the OHR.

Neo, I'd like to point out that DeluxePaint is the program that White Owl used to make his obscenely awesome graphics for FUABMX. Thanks for finding it, I've been wanting to try it, because White Owl said it was really awesome. Big grin

Also, WinRAR works with .ace files, so if you already have that, don't bother getting Winace.

Edit: This thing is like, married to the OHRRPGCE. Holy shit.

When I had the GIMP for a period of about one hour (between installation and my incredibly buggy comp rebootng itself over and over and over), it was the GREATEST THING EVER. Mainly because it has about the same power as PSP, but is completely and utterly free.

That gimp url was wrong. The real site is http://gimp.org/ (windows version installer at http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/ )

One of my favorite features in The Gimp is the dynamic keyboard-shortcut system. When you right-click on your image, you get a pop-up menu containing practically ever possible command, tool, folter, whatever. Some of them have keyboard shortcuts listed-- don't like the shortcuts? press a key while hovering the mouse over a menu item, and PING! that key suddenly becomes the shortcut key for that menu item. I can get all my favorite tools just where I want them on the keyboard, so with mouse in my right hand, and keyboard under my left hand, I can work on my drawing without ever using a menu and without ever looking at my keyboard.

And anybody who enjoys using the Gimp should check out its cousin, Sodipodi which is a free tool for making vector drawings (curvy-line-and-shape drawings, for those of us who aren't up on graphics terminology) Sodipodi isn't quite so useful as the Gimp for OHR graphics, but it is still a really cool free tool for the art-box of any computer artist who can't afford to shell out X-hundred dollars for the latest version of Adobe Illustrator.
