Inspired by a recent post in the Game Discussion, I thought it would be an interesting suggestion that we have ratings on our games.
Somehow, in writing this post, I'm feeling some dejavu like I've talked to someone about this er something.
But, anyway, since we have a variety of age groups in CP, it might be nice if the games on our gamelist were rated by the authors for content labels.
What do ya people think? _________________

That's not too bad an idea, really. Provided it's not too tough to implement, it'd be a nice addition. I believe this did come up at one point or another in the past, though, so your deja vu is probably for good reason _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

I agree with a vengeance (as opposed to...a forgiveness? Idunno).
I know that it would really help me sometimes when deciding whether to download a 4 meg file on my slow (oh! so slow) modem.
However, I must say that rating systems have crashed and burned often enough here. It's been proposed before, and it'll be proposed again.
Because of that, I suggest soemthing a little different. Instead of each game having a 'rating,' let's have something different. In the review sheet, how about adding a 'controverial material' field? The person who writes the review could say what he (or she, but generally he) saw as controversial. This would be much better than just a 'letter rating,' 'cause it would explain so much more. |

Minnek - It means "they've changed something "
Mr. B - I was thinking something along the lines of when you view the gamelist, where it has the "Production status", download link, and Average Grade, having a link that has the "letter rating", and when you click on it, having the content labels listed on a seperate page.
I wonder if IM would do that. ??? _________________

If I recall, I tried to start OHR-ESRB a while back; I even made rating standards as well as little logos.
However, it's simply unpopular. I only got 3 or 4 authors willing to do it, and many of them hadn't made games yet.
I'm not saying don't bother, I'm just saying you probably won't get very much support.
Though, if it were added to the Gamelist Options people might actually accept it. This is a much better idea then an outside source "rating" your game. _________________ But enough talk, have at you! |

Yeah, I was going to start the OHRCRB (Content Review Board) a way back when, but I just didn't have any support. It is a generally unpopular concept, and most people just don't like it. I fail to see why they don't like it, though... |

I've been giving my games ratings ever since I began using the OHR. I started it out just to be a joke, but since I've joined CP, I've taken it more seriously. All I know is none of my games will ever be "E" rated... _________________ Gyu, Doh! |

This idea has been thrown around since 1998. It's best to just leave it up to the authors (and your own descretion) to rate their games. I know Sword of Jade would get a M rating, easily, but I just use my own rating system. Nobody here wants to be subject to anothers "guidelines" on their ratings. [ohr.com plug] But on OHR dotcom there's a suggested rating that users can select so those worried about gory games, etc, can filter them out [/ohr.com plug]. |

I personally do not wish to have my games rated. This brings up a whole steaming bowl of hell where maybe the reviewers say your game is rated M when you think it's T, and then arguing ensues, and the Game is posted as M, and no one downloads it because they don't want porn. This kind of crap happens all the time with the MPAA Board, and the main people to lose are the consumers, who have to suffer because moviemakers/game designers cater to the Rating Board's idea of a clean movie, rather then the watchers idea of a good movie.
So, basically I beg of you:
Don't go through with it! No good will come of it! |

I typically don't design games directed at a single audience, so I don't think that the rating system is necessary. But I don't really care if my game gets a rating or not; there's no way it would change anything. |
